What can I substitute for chestnuts in a recipe?

Depends what the recipe us, but I have a chestnut casserole recipe that says it would work with replacing with mushrooms. As I don't like mushrooms I haven't tried that.

I'd probably leave them out entirely from that recipe. Or maybe top with toasted finely chopped hazelnuts. But then I'm not a fan of cooked nuts in savoury foods in general. Or as it's just DD who doesn't like them and everyone else does, as they're roughly chopped can she just pick them out?
