Board game recommendations

Hi, can you please recommend some good board games for 2 adults and an 8 and 10 year old. We're self isolating this half term so it'll give us something else to do if I order some up. Thanks Smile

MNHQ Update
This thread is a little out of date now, but if you've landed here while on the hunt for board game recommendations, our guide to the best family board games has been recently updated to reflect current availability and popularity. It includes a wide range of board game options, from strategic to silly - all tried, tested and recommended by Mumsnetters. We hope it's of some help! Flowers

Cluedo

3wheels · 24/10/2021 14:59

Thanks. We have and love cluedo.
Games we've got and play a lot are; 5 minute marvel, sleeping queens, Zeus on the lose, 5 second rule, labyrinth and monopoly. We love games and will give anything a go. X

The monopoly card game? Much faster than the board game and more fun!

Tickets to ride - it’s American, but there are various versions. It can be quite long, but it’s good and strategic once you get the hang of it!

Ticket to ride is the favourite here(also have 10&8 year olds).

The London Game

ditalini · 24/10/2021 15:13

I second Ticket to Ride and Carcassonne.

LanisHouseLot · 24/10/2021 15:19

If they like dinosaurs there's a great collaborative Jurassic Park board game. It's a bit complicated so needs one adult to take charge and learn all the rules well, but it's a lot of fun. One person is the dinosaurs, (it works well if this is the adult who is overseeing but doesn't have to be), and tries to stop all the people from escaping the island.

King of Tokyo is fun and quite silly.

Vio112 · 24/10/2021 15:32

Rummikub- easy to get the hang of and very addictive.

GiantCheeseMonster · 24/10/2021 15:34

Azul
Harry Potter Cluedo is a good variation
Cards Against Humanity Family Version is great and child-appropriate
Hive (a bit like Chess but with bugs - it’s addictive)
Exploding Kittens

Those are faves in our house.

TheDinosaurTrain · 24/10/2021 15:38

Carcasonne, Risk, Ticket to Ride, Rummikub - all favourites of ours

PossumGeorge · 24/10/2021 15:39

ilovespinach · 24/10/2021 15:46

Rummikub
Gubs
Monopoly Deal
Ludo

Flingingmelon · 24/10/2021 15:47

Horrible Histories board game is great

FixItUpChappie · 24/10/2021 16:06

My kids are the same age and I love board games. Here's a few that have worked for us (and not bored the adults stiff)

-Tiny Towns (can't recommend this enough)
-The Quacks of Quedlinburg
-Wizard Always Wins
-Mystic Market
-Campy Creatures
-Survive! Lost City of Atlantis
-Dixit
-Horrified
-Jamaica
-Splendor

We've been playing a game series called "Unmatched" with our 10 yr old - if your 8 yr old is a confident reader than you could try it all 4 of you...the kids love the theme - actually in general once your kids can confidently read cards that opens up a whole world of other games.....Disney's Villainous, Smash Up etc.

FixItUpChappie · 24/10/2021 16:08

I agree with the person above who said the Harry Potter Clue was a good version - it's quite nice if you kids love that theme

user1477249785 · 24/10/2021 16:11

We really enjoyed don't get got. Hours of fun.

ReturnfromtheStars · 24/10/2021 16:25

We love many of the games mentioned here & will give others a go, so just trying to mention ones not already mentioned:

Forbidden Island (co-operative game)
Shcotten Totten (2-player but couldn't leave off the list)
Mr Jack (2-player)
"Exit" home escape games (can only played once but if you look after them can be passed on to friends)

ReturnfromtheStars · 24/10/2021 16:26

Tichu

ReturnfromtheStars · 24/10/2021 16:28

Tichu is one of my favourites & we thought the kids during lockdown. Perfect 4-player game, you can even make your own version from normal cards, lots of rounds so everyone gets to win.
