When did dogs in food shops become a thing?!

I went to a local bakery today and there were 3 dogs in there. It’s a bakery and cafe. I thought it was illegal to have dogs where food is made and served but apparently not. DH told me it’s pretty standard now and all the local coffee shops and cafes allow them.

I’m sure all the dog lovers will say it’s fine, but I was really shocked. Am I the only one? I’m also allergic so normally choose not to be indoors with dogs.

Definitely not illegal and I’m glad to see dogs made welcome in more areas but I understand there are people who don’t want it

Thesunrising · 23/10/2021 15:55

I’m with you. It’s annoying that so many eat-in venues allow them. I’ve had several meals being annoyed by unconcerned dog owners letting their dogs sniff around my legs and bother my children. If more owners kept better control of their dogs I wouldn’t mind it so much, but too many owners seem to think everyone should be as delighted by their dogs as they are.

Elleextra · 23/10/2021 15:56

I hate it

I hate dogs anywhere near me and hate that I can't get away from them anywhere these days.

All my neighbours now have dogs and they yap and piss everywhere.

I was sitting at an outside table and a dog cocked it's leg and pissed less than half a metre away from me while the owner carried on like everything was fine.

So, so, so gross

When I was young it never happened (40 years ago). In the last 10 years it’s become increasingly popular. Since everyone bought their lockdown dogs, it seems that there’s only 1 cafe in my town that doesn’t allow dogs in. The place has an open kitchen and dog owners still think their dogs should be allowed in 🤮

Row1n · 23/10/2021 15:59

Bleugh Id hate that for any animal being allowed in tbh

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 23/10/2021 15:59

It isn't illegal. It's completely up to the owner of whatever establishment it is. I have no issues with it but I have a dog who enjoys coming to the pub and dog friendly cafes with us

HermioneWeasley · 23/10/2021 15:59

Gosh, wasn’t expecting anyone to agree with me!

It is v common and no cafe etc gets our trade. Highly unhygienic and a lot of people have problems with close contact with dogs for a number of reasons.

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/10/2021 16:04

I have 2 dogs and wouldn't take them to a cafe, they are labs and would want to eat everything Smile

PlasticDinosaur · 23/10/2021 16:04

I'm a dog owner and I still can't understand why they have to come everywhere with us.. my chap would much rather nap in the sunny spot of our living room than be molested by random strangers every two minutes.

However, I suppose much like at my house they aren't inviting the dogs into the kitchen.. so the food should be fur free.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 23/10/2021 16:04

I suppose it became a thing when so many people take their dogs for a walk and then want to stop for a coffee/cake. Cafes would potentially lose a lot of business if they didn’t allow dogs so many now allow them.

AnnListersBlister · 23/10/2021 16:05

How is it illegal? Have you never been in a country pub?

Simonjt · 23/10/2021 16:08

I I thought it was illegal to have dogs where food is made and served but apparently not.

What do you think people with assistance dogs do?

Tiredmum100 · 23/10/2021 16:08

I don't dislike dogs, but yeah I don't enjoy being surrounded by them in pubs etc. We went to the pub in the summer for food when we were away. There was a couple with a little dog for some reason people kept going up to it to talk to it like a baby, every time someone did, the dog starting barking and then the owners needed to try and calm it down. Lovely relaxing meal that was. Recently in pets at home whilst waiting to see the vet I saw a dog walk in, cock it's legs up and urinate all over one of the displays. When we came out from seeing the vet the floor in another part was covered in what I'm assuming to be dog wee which most people avoided but someone walked starlight through it. I just think its pretty disgusting and if you know you can't control your dog properly then you shouldn't take it in to public places. I recently had my parents dog to stay, I love her and think she's great so I'm not a dog hater or anything. I do appreciate not everyone likes dogs and some dog owners think we should all love their dogs as much as they do.

Firesidefox · 23/10/2021 16:09

I don't see the problem - I don't buy food that sits on the floor.

OP you're lucky you don't live in France - dogs there go to restaurants, even super smart ones, hairdressers, you name it.

I have a dog and love shops that let me take her in. Her paws are no dirtier than my shoes - we've both walked on the same pavements.

MrsFezziwig · 23/10/2021 16:13

This x one million. I love dogs as individuals but certainly don’t want random badly trained dogs being allowed to wander near me.

Longdistance · 23/10/2021 16:14

I’m not too keen in loads of dogs in cafes. I’d hate one to cock it’s leg up and piss there.
I can’t stand dogs that lick faces, just before they’ve licked their arse 🤢

Obviously assistance dogs are an exception Confused and as they are trained they don’t wander about all over the place.

True. I also don’t like badly trained children in cafes. On the whole, there are more annoying children than dogs in these places.

@Simonjt obviously I assumed assistance dogs would be an exception and rightly so.

Totally normal and I don’t see the problem with well behaved dogs. It’s lovely to do pub walks with your dog at the weekend and one of the many joys of dog ownership.

Having dogs barking and being a nuisance isn’t ok so I do feel for those owners who can.t/shouldn’t take their dogs to cafes. There is a coffee shop near me where dogs are welcomed happily, but the seating is all outside.

I work in a small supermarket and did once have to tell someone to leave their dog outside, who then got very confused as they seemed to think a dog in a food shop was ok.

But I don’t see the issue in a well behaved dog sitting or lying quietly under a table, especially if it’s outside.

wetotter · 23/10/2021 16:29

I tend to agree with thus.

I find most places allow dogs outdoors, only a few indoors (though pubs often do).

I think it should be entirely up to the proprietor, and they'll go for whatever is most profitable.

Places that welcome dogs will have lots of furry customers as dog owners swop info in where they can take Fido

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 23/10/2021 16:29

Sitting in the park minding my own business —reading MN— and a dog came up and licked my mouth (I didn’t have any food on me anywhere). Never happened with a child, even my own.

No way would I choose to eat somewhere that allows them in.

Jijithecat · 23/10/2021 16:29

Having seen a dog cock it's leg against a pillar in a cafe last weekend, I'd really rather food establishments only allowed service dogs in their premises.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 23/10/2021 16:31

Most dog owners have issues with badly behaved dogs. I wouldn't take my dog if he wasn't well behaved
