When did dogs in food shops become a thing?!

I went to a local bakery today and there were 3 dogs in there. It’s a bakery and cafe. I thought it was illegal to have dogs where food is made and served but apparently not. DH told me it’s pretty standard now and all the local coffee shops and cafes allow them.

I’m sure all the dog lovers will say it’s fine, but I was really shocked. Am I the only one? I’m also allergic so normally choose not to be indoors with dogs.

YANBU, I'm sick of seeing dogs everywhere. And people claiming it's the same as kids are thick as fuck and probably those awful dog people who let their dogs lick their lips.

I saw one in a trampoline park the other day, WTF. My DD is scared of them and it seems there's nowhere they aren't anymore

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

I prefer anywhere with dogs, and have hardly ever seen one being a nuisance. A few days ago we had lunch in a French restaurant in S Kensington, where a couple who were eating brought their golden retriever with them. He was perfectly well behaved. It’s much commoner in France to see dogs in restaurants.
Yep.agree with this.
Claudia84 · 23/10/2021 21:30

Surely if they're well behaved and not bothering anyone it's fine.
And fwiw the comparisons between dogs and children are to do with allowing bad behaviour and thinking that everyone else thinks it's cute. I no more want screaming kids running around my table whilst I'm eating or a baby taking food off my plate any more than I want dogs yapping or licking my mouth (wtf?!)
And yes they can be left alone at home but some people like the company and they bought a pack animal not a hamster so if they can have them with them they will.

Love dogs but can't stand them being in pubs/cafe. My 7 year old was attacked when he was 3 years old ( thankfully was on a lead and didn't do any harm) he's absolutely loves dogs but is so scared of strange dogs which makes him not want to go into a place with dogs in. Personal I don't want dogs drooling all over the place while I'm eating 😒

littlestmunchkin · 23/10/2021 21:37

Surely it's about what detracts from your experience. A toddler banging a toy massively spoils my experience and the parents never do anything about it . A dog barks and the owner tells it to shut up or takes it out . I can't see the issue with dogs , I've never had one be remotely annoying (or interested in me) whereas small children are so often so annoying and so LOUD

ChequerBoard · 23/10/2021 21:41

@LaBellina

I also dislike it, can’t imagine how problematic it must be for those who have an allergy. Hygiene is also an issue. But I’m more of a cat person anyways, part of the reason why I prefer cats is that they’re generally much more clean animals then dogs and do not smell.

Thank-you.

I have severe allergies to dogs (and lots of other animals) as does my son. Cafes and shops that allow dogs in and now places we cannot go without risking adverse reactions including hives, swollen streaming eyes and breathing problems akin to a severe asthma attack.

Flumo · 23/10/2021 21:41

@Kiduknot

I’d rather see we’ll behaved dogs than noisy kids!
What about well behaved children and noisy dogs???
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 23/10/2021 21:42

@Flumo you'd obviously prefer the well behaved kids. What a daft question

worriedstar · 23/10/2021 21:45

I saw a dog (a wet dog because it was raining) in a trolley in B+M bargains last week...when the staff questioned it( after another customer complained), the dog owner said "Oh we always put him in the trolley and no-one's said anything"...grim!

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 23/10/2021 21:45

I suspect it varies depending on where you’re from and what your ‘normal’ is. I used to live in the Lake District, and it’s really common there. I still regularly visit family there, and there’s very few places that dogs aren’t allowed. I don’t have a dog, but have no problem with them being in cafes etc.

Interestingly a very popular local cafe announced last summer that they were going ‘dog friendly’. There was a lot of fuss, people saying that they’d lose their custom, wouldn’t last very long etc. They’re busier than ever, and moving to bigger premises. So there’s obviously a market for it round here.

fuzzwuss · 23/10/2021 21:46

I am conflicted on this. Generally I like dogs and dont have a problem with them being somewhere as long as they are.well behaved, and if they are really ok with being there. It disturbs me though that some dogs are clearly stressed or frightened in these environments. A busy mall or a full cafe are not always suitable, and I feel sorry for the poor dogs who are dragged to these environments and made to lie under a table for hours. Its definitely more for the owners benefit.

Moonwatcher1234 · 23/10/2021 21:48

Massively dislike it…they sniff around tables, bark and jump up at my kids and the owners smile indulgently expecting me to coo over their dogs. A hard glare sometimes has the desired effect and they pull rover away but more often than not they tut and ignore.

Poetrypatty · 23/10/2021 21:48

It's not an either/or with dogs or kids though is it Confused Dogs are animals. People don't take their cats in cafes do they.

Never heard of the the street cat named Bob? If the cat was happy to be on a leash and went out a lot with their owners then there is nothing stopping them going. My cats wouldn't appreciate it though so I wouldn't ever take them.

Maybe it will become a new thing and they can all sit on the tables. Grin

FatAnkles · 23/10/2021 21:59

Not a dog owner, but would like one when I can devote the time...

I don't think it's necessary to take your dog everywhere. Not to the opticians, or to go to the GP, or the library, or the post office...but outside areas of cafés and pubs are fine. It's outside, fresh air, and away from any food displays.

I must admit I'd love to go to a cat cafe!
ilovebagpuss · 23/10/2021 22:25

I don’t mind a quiet dog in a pub but the other night I was having a meal and this table had 3 dogs and one would suddenly bark the most god awful bark scream noise and I jumped a mile and spilt my drink.
The owner apologised and said oh he’s having a nightmare and he proceeded to do this out of nowhere bark scream about 3 times making everyone jump it was bloody awful.
I know kids can be noisy but I don't take them to evening meals and would always take them out if they were loud.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 23/10/2021 23:30

There are cat cafes in the UK, apparently about 20 (2 in London). How do the dog haters on here feel about sharing a cafe with cats?

MrsFezziwig · 23/10/2021 23:31

Most dog owners have issues with badly behaved dogs. I wouldn't take my dog if he wasn't well behaved

The problem is that most owners seem to think their dogs are well behaved, even when the evidence is to the contrary.

Cat cafes are totally different - they are specific venues filled with cats for the purpose of allowing people to interact with cats. For the allergic they are very easy to avoid.

I'm not a dog hater at all. I'm just hideously allergic to them. I didn't choose to be. The problem with any and all shops and cafes welcoming dogs is that I can't tell where there will dogs and where there won't.

At least the cats have had the decency to open their own cafés. Grin I wouldn’t expect to be able to go into a cat café and demand that all the cats were removed - I just wouldn’t go.

Oh, and just because I don’t like dogs snuffling around when I’m eating and drinking doesn’t make me a dog hater.

Do they? I don't see misbehaving dogs everywhere. On the odd occasion there is one the owner does try to fix the situation. I do always think why they'd bring a dog that would misbehave
CheshireChat · 23/10/2021 23:52

I like dogs, but people who are scared of them or have allergies should have options so they can avoid them.

And having been stuck on a bus with a large, aggressive dog and my young son in a sling, I can tell you ot was terrifying.

ALongHardWinter · 24/10/2021 00:10

I'd far rather see a well behaved dog than some of the atrociously behaved children that frequent the coffee shops and cafes that I've visited recently.
