When did dogs in food shops become a thing?!

I went to a local bakery today and there were 3 dogs in there. It’s a bakery and cafe. I thought it was illegal to have dogs where food is made and served but apparently not. DH told me it’s pretty standard now and all the local coffee shops and cafes allow them.

I’m sure all the dog lovers will say it’s fine, but I was really shocked. Am I the only one? I’m also allergic so normally choose not to be indoors with dogs.

In a cafe or pub my dog happily lies beside me quietly whereas some children are tearing around being incredibly obnoxious. We were having na nice lunch a few Fridays ago andy dog was snoozing happily after a long walk and a toddler tried to help themselves to my bloody chips while the shit parent smiled and laughed about them loving chips. They were less happy when i suggested they buy then some then and stop letting their kid bother others.

Where we live there are a nice mix of places, some pubs have dogs and no kids, some neither some both some only kids. It works well for us as a family but when we are having a quiet pint in the dog friendly child free place theres always a parent complaining they cant bring their little precious in.

Please stop comparing children and dogs, it's incredibly offensive and frankly weird

Think it depends on the area of the country. Down in Cornwall I'd say mosr cafes are dog friendly. I can only think of Costa & a place local to me which don't. Many places are wanting dog walkers to warm up with a coffee& cake after a walk on the beach etc.

I don't think dogs are allowed in bakeries and actual food shops. They might be allowed in farm shops though but that would be up to the establishment

LivingTheLifeofMum · 23/10/2021 19:14

I don't like dogs and neither do my DC.

DH and I went to a nice hotel in Norfolk once and the front eating area was full of dogs Confused We ate our meal - me with one jittery eye on the mutts in the room - and before we left I went to the loo and passed a nice quiet separate dining room on the way that said "no dogs allowed in this area" 🤨 🤦🏻‍♀️

I agree. There was a really annoying old guy in a cafe. I prefer my dog and should be able to bring him everywhere and old people should be banned. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to get rid of people I don’t like. I also prefer dogs to sheep and cows so I think we should get rid of sheep on our farms.

I’ve found cafes that were previously no dogs are now dog friendly as they try to encourage in the locals (rural so everyone has a dog)since the tourist trade is still down. I like it as I have a dog, who is lovely and well behaved. Everyone is different though I’m sure you can find somewhere dog free.

I have dogs & certainly wouldn't take them into a cafe/restaurant. They're scavengers & would be trying to steal food! I kept them locked in the living room whilst we eat to stop them begging so I'm not going to annoy the public by unleashing them in a cafe. Plus I'd die if embarrassment if they peed/pood 🤦🏼‍♀️💩🐾

gaggiagirl · 23/10/2021 19:48

I was in a Dobbies with a Costa concession inside I was browsing the foodie gifts next to it and watched a spaniel cock it's leg and wee over a display of gourmet popcorn.

Another customer was once really nasty to me in the most dog friendly place in the Lake District which is saying something. Cafe has towels for dogs, free dog biscuits. It was pre covid so tables fairly close together.

I was on my own (apart from the dog) at a small table, dog was sat quietly under the chair on my right rather than under the table. At the next table we’re a couple and the woman was sat on the chair nearest to us with her back to us. We’d been there first. Her husband got up and hissed in my ear in a really nasty tone that I needed to pull the dog away from his wife, that the dog was too close, etc.

Really shook me up he was so nasty. If he’d asked nicely wouldn’t have been an issue but I did point out to him that he wasn’t speaking nicely or politely and pointed out that if they didn’t like dogs maybe they should go elsewhere. 😂

Glenthebattleostrich · 23/10/2021 19:56

@Essen its a little known fact (that i just made up) that sheep are in fact evil and plotting to overthrow humanity and keep all the cafés for themselves 🤣

DrCoconut · 23/10/2021 19:59

I guarantee my kids won't lick their arses before attempting to eat off someone else's plate! My DSs have literally had food snatched out of their hands in public places by badly controlled dogs. There is no comparison really.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/10/2021 20:32

I prefer anywhere with dogs, and have hardly ever seen one being a nuisance.
A few days ago we had lunch in a French restaurant in S Kensington, where a couple who were eating brought their golden retriever with them. He was perfectly well behaved.
It’s much commoner in France to see dogs in restaurants.

I can guarantee my dog won't try to eat off your plate.

Don't take your child to places that allow dogs
hotmeatymilk · 23/10/2021 21:12

Don’t take your dog to places that allow people, around whom our society is structured.

Audreyhelp · 23/10/2021 21:15

Children can’t stay home alone dogs can .

H1Drangea · 23/10/2021 21:17

Having seen waiting staff petting dogs and then serving tables , I now don’t go anywhere dogs are welcome
Wash your hands , and no , sanitiser doesn’t work as well
Dog owners need to remember that dogs are animals not humans , even if they are wearing bandanas or jackets

Right so it's me in the wrong taking my dog to dog friendly places 🤣 nah..

Yeah he can (not all dogs can though). I only take my dogs to dog friendly places when he is already out with us

How does that work then?
littlestmunchkin · 23/10/2021 21:19

I was in a cafe this morning and a couple had their baby and their dog. The dog was fine, baby very loud and annoying . I'd be more likely to avoid a cafe with babies in!

I was in Asda today and a lady had a dog in a pushchair. I was dumbfounded but I didn’t say anything
