Carbs with carbs, and a side order of carbs. WTF M & S?

Good grief, no wonder we have an obesity crisis. Was in M & S cafe for a mid morning coffee and spotted their latest menu. Included is a mac and cheese toasted sarnie, with which you can have a side order of fries for an extra £2. Can't believe they seriously thought this was a good idea.
Should probably have posted this in AIBU! what's the most bizarre offering you have seen on a menu?

So nowhere can sell triple chocolate cakes, burgers and chips etc etc? You want to take away that choice from everyone?

Basically yes which is nonsense

Pythonista · 23/10/2021 14:32
@Pythonista because that's going terribly well isn't it?
I'm not suggesting a totalitarian regime where people are not allowed to eat what they want, but i do think some common sense from food retailers and providers about what they offer and promote might help people make better decisions.
I'm obese. Not because the food suppliers offer bad things but because I eat too much.

Plus did nobody ever eat Heinz spaghetti and toast?

Sirzy · 23/10/2021 14:32
@Sirzy no, that would be ridiculous.
So what exactly are they permitted to sell? What meets your standards?

miltonj · 23/10/2021 14:33

I love Mac and cheese toasties. Fries might be taking it too far but if you're already being unhealthy might as well triple load!

SophieKaczynsky · 23/10/2021 14:33

Obscenely unhealthy?! They're hardly serving class A drugs! What an over reaction

miltonj · 23/10/2021 14:33

@RJnomore1

There’s a fantastic place in Manchester does them. They’re smashing.
Northern soul? I love them!
Notonthestairs · 23/10/2021 14:33

So M&S can only offer food you consider to be morally appropriate? Or maybe they should vet people before they'll sell it to them? Limit access to aisles based on BMI?Offer a free medical and select food for you?

Pythonista · 23/10/2021 14:33

And what about lasagne and chips? Is that acceptable

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 23/10/2021 14:34
@Mrsjayy But do they have a moral obligation not to condone something that is blatantly unhealthy?
But lots of places sell blatantly unhealthy food ie coffee shops with chocolate mud cakes, fast food shops etc.

Pythonista · 23/10/2021 14:35

And could you buy chips, Mac n cheese and a huge cream cake?

Tillymintpolo · 23/10/2021 14:35

I’d order that, and probably have a cake for pudding too 👍🏻

Pythonista · 23/10/2021 14:35

Grin at 'moral obligation'

JaninesEyePatch · 23/10/2021 14:36

@Pythonista

Grin at 'moral obligation'
🤣
MatildaTheCat · 23/10/2021 14:38

To be fair M&S have upsized most of their clothes to an absolutely ludicrous extent so they probably need to fatten us all up in the hope someone will buy their relentlessly foul clothes.

Sarcobaleno · 23/10/2021 14:39

Yanbu. It sounds revolting. Our country really needs to shift its attitude towards diet unless we want the NHS to crumble.

AudTheDeepMinded · 23/10/2021 14:41

Thank you for helping me unpick my thoughts on this, even if some of you are being a little unkind.
I agree with what a lot of you say. You can't control what people eat, not should you. I still consider that modelling healthier diets is not a bad thing, nutritious and delicious food does not have to be fat and carb laden. By offering and promoting a meal combination which comprises three lots of fat heavy carb options M & S are not doing this. There is an obesity crisis which is getting worse. A collective effort to help people help themselves surely shouldn't be sneered at as controlling should it?

What about people who are slim and healthy and want the occasional blowout?

Everyone knows you need to eat healthier and exercise etc etc. the fact that M&S or whoever else is offering something deemed 'unhealthy' is going to do fuck all to change things

AudTheDeepMinded · 23/10/2021 14:43

@Sarcobaleno thank you, I'm feeling a little vilified here!

Camblewick · 23/10/2021 14:43

You know that we're all responsible for what we put in our mouths, right?

That's not much worse than a massive piece of chocolate cake with cream. You can go onto any restaurant and there's usually a pie and chips/mash on the menu it seems strange that you object so strongly to a toastie.

I think sugar is a bigger issue than carbs to be honest.

hettol · 23/10/2021 14:44

There is an obesity crisis which is getting worse.

Far better to promote nutrition & cooking in schools & increase PE time rather than froth at M&S if we want to tackle this crisis.

Pythonista · 23/10/2021 14:44

'Modelling' healthy diets? Like you 'model' politeness to children?

Adults can make their own choices. The information is out there, people lecturing grown adults doesn't help

hettol · 23/10/2021 14:45

Our country really needs to shift its attitude towards diet unless we want the NHS to crumble.

We have an ageing population where people are living longer which has huge implications for the NHS.

AudTheDeepMinded · 23/10/2021 14:45

@Camblewick my understanding (GCSE science, so maybe a bit rusty), is that carbs are converted to sugar by our bodies. Which is why diabetics have to limit the amount of carbs they eat.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 23/10/2021 14:46

I’d like to have a balanced meal on my plate when I go out for lunch, so I’d be more concerned about what’s missing - no proper veg? Any fibre?

DoItAfraid · 23/10/2021 14:46
@Mrsjayy But do they have a moral obligation not to condone something that is blatantly unhealthy?
Why does obligation not extend to high street cafes that serve multiple slices of fried bread, tinned / roasted tomatoes, beans, 2 fried eggs, 2 bacon rashers, 2 sausages, black pudding etc as a standard breakfast menu item?

You are just being goady referencing M and S..
