Carbs with carbs, and a side order of carbs. WTF M & S?

Good grief, no wonder we have an obesity crisis. Was in M & S cafe for a mid morning coffee and spotted their latest menu. Included is a mac and cheese toasted sarnie, with which you can have a side order of fries for an extra £2. Can't believe they seriously thought this was a good idea.
Should probably have posted this in AIBU! what's the most bizarre offering you have seen on a menu?

Pasta and bread....but people have been having pasta dishes with garlic bread
The Italians haven't. Also their pizzas are thin thin thin. So are they. Unlike us ..[/quote]
Wrong, the Italians made garlic bread with pasta a thing. I should know. Pasta and garlic bread is quintessentially Italian.

So Italians aren't just thin, they are 'thin thin thin' - unlikely us blobby Brits who are all presumably fat fat fat, because M&S doesn't just serve carbs, it serves carbs carbs carbs.

This thread is comedy gold - thanks for starting it OP Grin

I love garlic bread and pasta but you never see it in Italy! Also Neapolitan pizzas (as in from Naples) are thick, thick, thick!

SueSaid · 25/10/2021 09:29

'Well if you are so worried about carbs, why are you buying sandwiches and juice anyway?'

You seem a it confused. Carbs are fine and obviously part of a healthy diet.

It is the massive quantities that some gorge on that is the problem.

Yep. Italians in any case use far less garlic in things requiring garlic than British cooking does and in the 28 years I've been living here, I've never seen garlic bread. I have heard numerous Italians (when I bring school groups over) saying "wtf is this?" though.

I think everyone is a bit confused. In the case of Mac and cheese toasty is it not the vast quantities of cheese and possibly cream and butter used that makes it a bit of a calorific feast… plain pasta and two slices of toast is not brilliant, or appetising, but I could eat that fairly regularly and not worry about my waistline . A bowl of creamy cheese sauce daily not so much.

Even if I wasn't coeliac I would avoid this for a stick of celery and a glass of water. That would easily fill me for the rest of the day. I'm kidding of course, I miss being able to just order comfort food so much. Pasta and bread is awesome.

Not all Italians are super thin
Most Italians I know from when I worked with an Italian company were just normal sized
Like a 10 ish and quite tall
They did love food though ❤️

I think if you compare an average Italian town centre to an average UK one you will conclude we are generally vastly bigger. A much higher proportion of obese people. And yes the Italians love food. Much less likely to shovel any old crap in their mouths.

Well, if the Italians OP knew were quite tall, then she wasn't meeting the average Italian anyway.
What I see in both Spain and Italy is a tendency among women to be very slim before marriage and children and for it to change afterwards. They are also quite honest and frank about wanting to be slimming and eating in a way that makes that happen, something that is quite taboo in the UK.

julieca · 27/10/2021 19:30

In UK about 27% of people are obese and in Italy about 1 in 10. So a thinner population, but no they are not all slim.

Newpuppymummy · 27/10/2021 19:36

Sounds gross to me but I couldn’t get worked up about what other people are eating.

Bluntness100 · 27/10/2021 19:44

But surprised by this. A single Mac and cheese toastie is not obscenely unhealthy, it isn’t like markies are suggesting folks have them as one of their five a day.

P,lenty of things can be unhealthy, from a bowl of Ben and jerrys to a dominoes pizza, but generally every single thing is fine eaten in moderation as part of an overall healthy diet.

PaperMonster · 27/10/2021 20:02

I low carb due to Diabetes so would never even entertain one of these - but I’ve seen this thread so often now, I’m actually craving one!!!
