Carbs with carbs, and a side order of carbs. WTF M & S?

Good grief, no wonder we have an obesity crisis. Was in M & S cafe for a mid morning coffee and spotted their latest menu. Included is a mac and cheese toasted sarnie, with which you can have a side order of fries for an extra £2. Can't believe they seriously thought this was a good idea.
Should probably have posted this in AIBU! what's the most bizarre offering you have seen on a menu?
@BananaPB I've not complained to them, just voiced my thoughts on an internet forum. As I mentioned earlier, it would appear that my actual tea will be my own arse handed to me on a plate. Good job I'm not the sensitive type.
Haha fair play OP!

I do see what you mean, it feels excessive but also blimmin tasty.

julieca · 23/10/2021 17:26

M and S also sell perfectly normal ingredients to cook with and plenty of salads.

Mulhollandmagoo · 23/10/2021 17:29
@Pythonista honest question, do you think the active promotion of unhealthy food has any detrimental affect on people who struggle?
Of course it does, I struggle with it hugely and I'm overweight so I do understand this point, but there are a lot of people who don't, and are able to eat really well and only treat themselves once in a blue moon. Those people shouldn't have to miss out because of my lack of self control.

I think a huge part of the obesity crisis comes from that fact that for the past 20 years food has been demonised so much through shit fad diets that people have a really poor relationship with food, if I didn't have that then I wouldn't be overweight!

The meal does sound a bit rank to me though 😕

BiscuitLover09876 · 23/10/2021 17:32

Ok so it's bad so is a cheeseburger and fries. And any of their cakes. And any soft drink. I really don't think it's that bad.

Carbs aren't actually the devil you know...

NobdieTheNob · 23/10/2021 17:32
@Mrsjayy But do they have a moral obligation not to condone something that is blatantly unhealthy?
No, they don't.

nevernomore · 23/10/2021 17:33

I'm really hungry and haven't eaten properly for days. That sandwich and fried is EXACTLY what I need!

Well said. Arse with a side order of chips?

(The M&S carbfest reminds me of halls of residence food: pizza and chips. Pasta and chips. Jacket potato and chips. Chips and chips).

QuestionableMouse · 23/10/2021 17:48

I'm overweight and I'd never eat something like that. It sounds gross.

AudTheDeepMinded · 23/10/2021 18:14

@Cactus1982 thank you for your opinion, and the elegant way in which it was phrased. One of the most interesting things I've noticed about this thread are the assumptions made about my own body, and based on those assumptions, that I have no right to express an opinion or debate some of the issues. If I had stated at the outset that I was a size 22 and struggle with health conditions, I think people would have reacted in a whole different manner. I'm not, but neither am I a skinny competitive gym bunny as you and others seem to have presumed.
PS I have a life, this very evening I am off to see a 70s rock tribute band in the shires, which I think you'll agree is living life at the edge, but thanks for the suggestion.

Of all the subjucts to debate on Mumsnet the issue of healthy or unhealthy weight/food always ends up becoming nasty.
People take it personally and become very defensive.

AudTheDeepMinded · 23/10/2021 18:23

@Babybellblue I agree, most people have managed to have a sensible debate but some just can't put forward an opinion without launching personal attacks. I wonder how many of them advocate #bekind until they have the anonymity of the internet to protect them?

I like to think I’ve contributed neither Grin

Babybellblue · 23/10/2021 18:31

It also happens in real life. A recent personal example... as I've mentioned upthread I'm currently 1 stone over my healthy weight and have just started a low carb diet. I have done this for me as its been getting me down and makes ME feel fat and unattractive and more importantly unhealthy.
There are some larger colleagues at my place of work. They have noticed I have been bringing in salads. They asked why and I just said I was feeling unhealthy. End of conversation as far as I was concerned.

But no... I was accused of hating fat people as I wasn't even that big and was trying to shame them.
For me being fat is unattractive but I wasn't involving others. I also got my arse handed to me for attempting to be responsible for my OWN health.

Utter madness

This must be why the north is seen as deprived , bleak and undereducated

Even my friends with doctorates (they do exist north of the watford gap) eat pasty barms. With mushy oeas and cabbage to make it ‘eltheh (no h sounds round ere)

Awalkintime · 23/10/2021 18:38

Be kind = be quiet because I don't like your opinion.

Lightisnotwhite · 23/10/2021 18:44

I sort of agree Op.

There was a time when fizzy drinks like Coke and Lemmonade was just as a treat. Lucozade was strictly for when you had been ill and not able to eat much. Now they are part of a Meal Deal and many kids consume them everyday.

Yes it all delicious but making things more available does lead to people making poor choices.
Also applies to wine. Which is personally favourite nemesis.

Whats the North got to do with it. I'm a born and bred Mancunian Confused
skippy67 · 23/10/2021 18:46

@AudTheDeepMinded

I know I'm not required to order it. I'm objecting to a high street shop with a massive presence normalising something obscenely unhealthy.
Oh, get over yourself. Making out you're so concerned for the people who aren't as "clever" as you. When really you're looking down your nose at people who may make choices that are not the same as yours. So patronising.
Keeping2ChevronsApart · 23/10/2021 19:09

@Notonthestairs

So M&S can only offer food you consider to be morally appropriate? Or maybe they should vet people before they'll sell it to them? Limit access to aisles based on BMI?Offer a free medical and select food for you?
She'll be campaigning for a very narrow cake aisle next, so that the fat people can't get down there
Georgyporky · 23/10/2021 19:10

My local pub does some really tasty food, but often with 3 carbs & little or no veg.

Lasagne with chips & garlic bread.
Meat curry with rice, naan & poppadum.
Spag bol with a pastry pie lid & chips.
Breaded chicken fillet in a bun with chips.

You can pay extra for a salad - a few shredded leaves, 2 slices each of cubumber & tomato & 2 radishes for £ 3.50.

Mrsjayy · 23/10/2021 19:13

Wait! a bolognaise with a pie lid Confused
@Pythonista what are your thoughts on what would be helpful to help those who struggle?
Actually, OP, I was going to ask you the same thing.

I don’t see government interference on advertising helping all that much with other “unhealthy” choices. Some
campaigns work, others don’t.

Certainly not alcohol, as an example. Restrictions on advertising, tick, but then allow alcohol companies to sponsor everything in sight (clearly not advertising Hmm). Doesn’t really make sense. Change licensing laws to create a more “European” culture—well that didn’t seem to work for pubs. The Great British Individuals are not swayed.

To be honest, the biggest successes seem to come from what is deemed socially acceptable and what isn’t, though even public censure seems to drive certain behaviours underground rather than eliminate them.

I’m not interested in telling people what to do with themselves (unless they came from my body or through adoption and are under the legal age of 18 and and/or are living in my home under my responsibility).

So change minds, not adverts. And really ask yourself why you think corporations have a moral responsibility to anyone.

isadoradancing123 · 23/10/2021 19:44

Ffs, we already have enough of a nanny state without people like you, it sounds revolting to me, but if you dont fancy it dont bloody order it

ivfbabymomma1 · 23/10/2021 19:50
