Unoptionally. Basically Hobson's choice. Forced to.

What a great word.

Love it!

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/10/2021 03:42

IKR? Why does this word not exist?

At Christmas with my DSis family (must be 2 years ago), my DS (13) was asked to come into the kitchen to be a slave. We all knew that was family slang for 'I need some help'. He said he didn't want to be called a slave. Instead he would be a 'mandatory volunteer' !

Clearly he was to work in the kitchen 'unoptionally'!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/10/2021 03:58

Voluntold... being told you are volunteering.

What about compulsory?
rrhuth · 23/10/2021 04:09

Haha, I complained once to the school once about some compulsory volunteering and wish I had used 'unoptionally' and 'voluntold' in my letter now Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/10/2021 04:43

What about compulsory?

Piffle. Unoptionally is so much better.

Unoptionally is great! Slightly different nuance to compulsory (which shows why we have so many words for very similar concepts in English) and I think I will adopt both that and voluntold!

rrhuth · 23/10/2021 04:51

I agree because compulsory sounds like it might be correct whereas unoptionally brings to mind the unfairness of not having the options you really deserve.

Pokhora · 23/10/2021 06:09

Volitionless could be another option. I think this is an actual word, lacking volition or the power of choice.

Theworldisfullofgs · 23/10/2021 06:11

I like unoptionally, it feels like there's an illusion of choice.

Mumobag · 23/10/2021 06:12

Unoptionally - I like it.

My 4yo asked if we could put the sunbrella up over the patio table. A much better word than parasol!

Auroreforet · 23/10/2021 06:33

@Mumobag loving sunbrella.
Will be using that next year.

This is cute.

Although I've sometimes wonder why umbrellas aren't called "pararains " given we have parasol, parachute etc

Raaarrrrrrrr · 23/10/2021 06:36

We have jumpoline.

Also 'tiger paws' (fox gloves)
And 'whackamolee' (guacamole)

Or trousers have "leg sleeves". Jumpers have "arm sleeves". This is from DD2 being a toddler, and I think its rather logical.

She also renamed bedside tables as bedtime tables... again logical, its everything she needed at bedtime.

MyOtherProfile · 23/10/2021 06:58

@garlictwist in French umbrella is parapluie so they nailed it!

marsiettina · 23/10/2021 07:04

My dd’s word is claustrofootic, as she hates socks, tights etc as dislikes the feeling of her toes being confined. I think the word sums that up perfectly.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 23/10/2021 07:31

Children are brilliant at inventing new words.

My DS used to call his teddies 'soft blooded animals'. Perfect description.

AnUnlikelyCombination · 23/10/2021 07:35

Living these. Rather specific, but dd named the last remaining cannelloni in the dish, the cannellonely.

Mollymalone123 · 23/10/2021 07:38

@ItsReallyOnlyMe
That’s adorable

Notdoingthis · 23/10/2021 07:41

My dd aged 3 used 'oopsidentally' last week.

doodlejump1980 · 23/10/2021 07:46

My wee boy fell and hurt his “bum elbow” (hip).

doodlejump1980 · 23/10/2021 07:48

Oh and avocados are now known as “gwoks”, (as they make guacamole)
