My friend's cat Instagram account

It's been a gradual thing that's gone too far.

My friend of 20 years runs a large cat Instagram page.

It's her passion. It's all she ever wants to talk about. She makes no money from it. She spends around 6 hours a day doing it.

This has been the situation for some years. She used to have a sense of irony about it. I've always figured it is her hobby. Tried to support her a bit but essentially try and have a relationship beyond the cat Instagram account.

In the last year or so (obviously Covid has affected us all) I have multiple times had her text me she is too busy to meet or chat, using work as an excuse.

Then it's clear she's been creating videos for the cat Instagram.

She is talented. The videos use music, lots of angles. They get thousands of likes.

I felt sad she was prioritising this over friends but more than anything, I think we should all be able to pursue our own happiness. She wasn't hurting anyone. Indeed thousands of people really enjoy the videos.

In the last week things have reached another level. She is an expat who hadnt visited the UK for 3 years (Covid). She is here butv rather than meeting any friends, she is visiting other cats...and videoing it.

The cats she is visiting are very famous in this strange world of Instagram.

I know she hopes to make money from this account. And I understand the visits will help.

But I think she is losing perspective.

She has always lived in a sort of fantasy world. Her creativity and hard work and optimism are wonderful.

I can't possibly say anything.

Do I just need to chill the eff out?

She's not a best friend...it's less the impact on me...than I really think she's losing touch with reality.

Or should I be cheering her on more?? She is successful.

I do appreciate this sounds nuts. Up till 12 months ago she would joke herself about it. I know her and her partner are on the verge of splitting. Do you think she is ok?

Bentoforthehorde · 22/10/2021 20:47

I want to know so I can follow too. Cats and food, that's all I follow on Instagram Grin

Maireas · 22/10/2021 20:48

She said she asked her "gently" @DaisyNGO, so we'll leave it at that Wink

That's crazy cat lady on steroids, that is.

So where does she get her income from atm, assuming no money from Instagram?

Youngatheart00 · 22/10/2021 20:58

No worse than ‘mummy bloggers’ making a living out of flogging tat.

Preferable in fact. I love cats 😁

@Yummypumpkin

Thanks everyone.

I don't want to name the page, as it increases the risk that my friend will see this, and she would be very hurt.

It's quite easy to find the big cat pages on Instagram, if your comments are genuine. My friend is in no sense in the Premier league. But she does OK.

I tend to agree with those saying to leave her to it.

I utterly disagree with those who are wrong about sponsored posts and her making money.

Firstly, I've worked in digital marketing since 2012 so I know the revenue streams. Secondly, her favourite topic of conversation is, how can I monetise this?

I just feel this was a fun, healthy hobby that has recently become a bit of escapism that is making her neglect her job, partner, friends and family.

She's happy, it's her hobby. Honestly leave her alone, she's clearly made friends with like minded people running other account.

You can totally make money from Instagram, I know as I do. It's not just always paid posts but often Collaborations. PR company's will often get in touch wanting to send free products. She probably gets a lot of cat products and food gifted. You can very much choose to make money from Instagram I know several large account holders personally. Some choose to make Ads some do not. But she clearly enjoys it I don't know why it bothers you?

Thanks all. Whether it's the Friday night thing or something else I feel the key points of:

I know she's not making money because she asks me all the time for advice to make money

And

Her partner, friends and family feel they are losing her

Have been lost as people assure me she is making money (and lying to us all? I doubt that as she runs a different business and is very frank)

And...you want to see the page. That's nice and I do understand but there are 10,000+ plus accounts focusing on cats that have 11k followers or above (my friend has 11k followers). Just do an instasearch for them.

Thanks a lot. I'll leave her to get on with it.

I'll swap you your cat friend for any one my friends please. Anyone willing to travel to visit a cat is a winner in my eyes.
She has a passion and is good at it. Would you be the same if she was really into surfing?

MusingOnStarlight · 22/10/2021 23:26

Can someone tag me when we have the account name? I love cats

Seeingadistance · 22/10/2021 23:55

tcjotm · 23/10/2021 00:37

As far as what happens when the cats die; Cole and Marmalade are very famous cats and sadly Cole died recently but he’s left a legacy and I doubt they’ll be changing the name anytime soon. No one wants to forget him.

Exactly Another reason I'm surprised at the OP pondering the name

Which I still really want to know ...😂

EarringsandLipstick · 23/10/2021 09:36

I know she's not making money because she asks me all the time for advice to make money

Her partner, friends and family feel they are losing her

Well, you didn't say any of this in your OP so they didn't get 'lost' in the replies. 🤷🏻‍♀️

That does make a difference, if those close to her feel it's a problem.

Personally, I think leave her at it. It's incomprehensible to me (as a very non-cat person) but of course I understand why someone would enjoy it.

If her partner & close family have concerns, they should deal with it. Not you.

About the money, you sound uniformed about how promotional content / SPs work, despite your role.

She should be making money if she isn't - why don't you help her to do so, with your digital marketing experience? That's a tangible way you can help.

bestcattoyintheworld · 23/10/2021 10:40

Cats are amazing and more people should dedicate their lives to making cat Instagram pages. Your friend sounds great.

DedalusBloom · 23/10/2021 10:49

Love me a bit of theoreocatofficial page - Pudding is my dream cat. 🧡🧡

Also mrkermitmeow - I have a thing for chatty ginger cats it seems!

dontgobaconmyheart · 23/10/2021 10:52

If you have the relevant experience and expertise and she is asking for advice on how to monetise or correctly monetise her venture then why not help her then OP, rather than critique it through the lens of your own preferences.

She has the reach and clearly the talent and commitment to turn this into some sort of income or further personal success, that is obviously what she wants to do. I couldn't bear to see a friend working so hard and doing so well and not be getting renumerated when she easily could be with the follower count, and could potentially build it into something even better with sensible business advice.

If her family and close friends are actually concerned (rather than disapprove or would rather she dropped it to spend time with them) they can have that conversation with her anytime but armchair psychology is never a wise foundation with which to critique others choices.
