Why does the new Monopoly game have an M instead of the £ sign?

On our standard London version the one with a card instead of cash is e.g. 600k for Old Kent Road instead of £6 and 4M for Mayfair instead of £400.

We still use cash and costs from the old edition because how can you gloat and demonstrate your prowess when nobody can see your pile of cash.
