ADs and The Brave New World

When you kind of hope that a new thread meanders on quietly because it means that life is being fairly stable...

What are ADs?

Here's the copy and paste job...

Definition of AD
^AD stands for anti dementor.
There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.^

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

I said free but the actual cost of all these tests is millions of pounds. I was at DC secondary school yesterday when they had a batch delivered and it was boxes and boxes and more boxes.

It is a shame that it's become a source of anxiety for some people.

Worldgonecrazy · 24/11/2021 17:34

I can’t look but saw a headline about WHO pushing for mandatory vaccination.

Someone please tell me that I have misunderstood and the conspiracy theorists are wrong about this one.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/11/2021 18:11

@amicissimma

I agree, Taswama. It's great to have a quick, simple and free way to broadly check if one is probably OK to go to various events/visits etc.

I do find it sad to see on the C boards that these tests have just added another reason for anxiety to some people. It seems that some can't just look at it go 'oops, looks as if I might be positive, I'd better stay in and double check' or 'fine, probably OK to got to [whatever], but as the tests aren't perfect I'll take care around the possibly vulnerable' or even 'that's not clear, I'd better check again in a few hours and be cautious if I need to go out in the meantime'.

There is thread after thread with photographs of their tests, although a photograph is always going to be even less clear than the real thing. People aren't just looking at them, but are shining lights on them and studying them. And, even when it looks completely clear (and I often Mumsnet on my 40" TV), there's always someone who says 'I can see a line'. And the posters, far from being reassured, seem to get quite distressed by their inability to decide what the test means.

It's just like line-spotting with pregnancy tests, except I can understand most wanting to see the lines in pregnancy, especially if TTC has a long history. This is like a weird perversion of that. Do they want to be ill so they get all the sympathetic hun messages?

A while back, I was walking home from school and a mum simpered "I'm just obsessed with doing LFTs" and did an actual real life tinkly laugh!

We have all now done LFTs at some point when there's been a particular reason of someone being under the weather (rather than specifically ill), but particularly with DS1 who gets stress headaches and is prone to anxiety I don't want to validate hypochondria and health anxiety.

I wish I could. I don't actually trust the WHO as far as I can throw it any more anyway. Also, what about people with medical reasons who can't be vaccinated?

110APiccadilly · 24/11/2021 18:17

I saw in the news that the furlough equivalent scheme for the self employed had been found to have discriminated against those who had been on maternity, but no one will be getting any more money - how can that be right? Is this just another Covid trumps all thing?

justasking111 · 24/11/2021 22:41

In Wales one third of covid deaths were hospital acquired 2000 people. Around 9000 cases were hospital acquired

Lostinacloud · 25/11/2021 06:12

That’s crazy @justasking111. All this information we are being fed that it’s the unvaccinated and the fault of the population for daring to try and get on with life, when actually a very large proportion of infections are taking place inside hospitals. I bet that’s the same across most of the world as well.

Lostinacloud · 25/11/2021 06:26

Meanwhile in France I think it’s about to go backwards today Sad. They are announcing the new restrictions later and word on the street is - boosters for all within 5 months of the last dose, the covid passport cancelled if you don’t get it, masks everywhere again including outside in towns Hmm and outdoor play for the kids at school Angry. And the validity of negative tests to only last 24hrs which is ridiculous. They don’t leak as much information as the uk prior to making the speech so goodness knows what else.
I’m so depressed and fed up with it. We were all told the vaccines would be the way out and that was clearly complete crap. But if that remains complete crap then what good is a booster? I get that a booster is essential for those vulnerable and that’s great but for everyone else, it feels like endless injections and putting up with side effects for zero benefit. I don’t need protecting from covid but getting a booster isn’t going to help bring all this horrific restriction to life to an end either. Plus I’m just generally not ok with being told that I must get a booster or i will essentially be “grounded” and not welcome anywhere anymore Angry FFS it’s an utter nightmare.
It’s extra hard at the moment because my whole family are in England where they have almost forgotten it existed and have been meeting up and doing totally normal life for months.

Wish I could help you get out. I think it is horrifying.

WouldBeGood · 25/11/2021 08:49

@Lostinacloud 💐 Ironically I got my booster last night, purely so I could get to France for a few days at Christmas time. I am so desperate for a change of scene.

It was really dystopian. Jags done in full view of everyone, and administered by the army. Masks obviously as I’m in Scotland. Told it was Pfizer as “that’s what the government recommends”. I felt really coerced and quite upset by the whole experience. The nurse/bouncer also said to me “we never thought we’d see the like”. Darn right!

Lostinacloud · 25/11/2021 09:45

Thanks so much for the flowers and words of compassion. It means a lot just to have somewhere to express my feelings. My family are gorgeous and would drop everything to help me but at the same time I don’t feel they can relate much anymore because they really have been getting on with life and hardly think of covid anymore.
@ISaySteadyOn I have told my DH that the red line will be compulsory vaccines for our DC. If that happens then we will get out of here no matter what the personal consequences as I’m just not comfortable with giving it to my young DC. Yesterday I heard a doctor on radio 2 saying the words “we just don’t know” with regard to how many boosters people will need in the future. I’m just not happy with any “we don’t knows” when it comes to the health of my DC. I also read that the trials in America on 5-11 year olds were carried out on such a small sample size (under 2000) that the FDA are planning a 5 year follow up program to make sure they’re safe - meanwhile still injecting children everywhere. It’s just not acceptable and how it can be getting close to mandatory for them to have them so they can join in normal life I don’t know!

justasking111 · 25/11/2021 09:46

Whisper in Wales is that over 60s won't get the booster till February in our health board. They're bragging they're doing 100 shots a day. Well there's 630k folks under our health board 🙄

BogRollBOGOF · 25/11/2021 14:34

I will get my booster done at a point that suits me (having felt wiped out after my first AZ) but still being fairly young and on good form, I've no wish go have the palaver of on-going boosters indefinitely. If it gets us through this winter without worse consequences, I'll suck it up. It does concern me that there simply hasn't been the chance to study the vaccines over a prolonged period, and that's extra reason for coercion to be a bad idea, and expanding into age groups where there isn't an individual clinical benefit.

I did see one report in the last couple of weeks where in 12-18s, the longer spacing used in the UK/ Europe was better than the short gap between doses used in the USA. And that's the thing, it takes time and control groups to find these things out. If you implement it across the population where the individual benefits are not clearly apparent, it's harder to see the patterns develop.

DH's colleague underwent a catastrophic immune system reaction in April, co-incidentally not long after his vaccination. That condition has now been linked as a very, very rare side effect. He ended up in ITU for a few months and is still very slowly recovering. There probably won't be a clear cause identified, but that type of potential effect is why free consent and bodily autonomy are so important. Policies have to be proportionate to the effects and potential hazards of the vaccines. They are clearly having worthwhile benefits in the UK and it's good that the majority are accepting them because they are satisfied with the overall risk-benefit. Countries like Austria may well find further dented good will towards vaccinations in the future.

I was so very fed up last winter, but at present England is a good place to be. It must be so wearing being in countries with tighter restrictions. Flowers

That's really slow. Dh has just had his booster appointment and he's in his 40s but cv (not cev). Parents are in their 70s and were sorted weeks ago

Worldgonecrazy · 27/11/2021 15:38

In wales for the weekend. It feels a bit dementory, masks everywhere.

And as the conspiracy theorists predicted, new variant just in time for Christmas Hmm

WouldBeGood · 27/11/2021 15:41

@Worldgonecrazy yep. Feeling quite down

smallandimperfectlyformed · 27/11/2021 18:45

I feel sad today. I currently have covid, got it off of my oldest daughter who got it from a friend at school etc etc- it's a contagious respiratory virus and there's no way I'm blaming my 12 year old or any other child for me catching it. As a single mum it's rubbish because I can't have any help at home with the kids. God bless my mum she took my youngest 2 to the testing centre to get another PCR test and she will be travelling 5 miles every day to take them to school and back. Feel pretty shitty that I will be making such a demand of my 71 year old mums time!
Lostinacloud my heart really does go out to you, France has shocked me with its measures. Wonder if jourdain ever sneaks a look at these threads any more? She surely has family and friends there. The news of the new variant and masks being reintroduced has made me feel quite sad, and this morning I saw a post on the covid board which was almost psychotic in its salivating that the old normal was over forever. In fairness most people, even those more anxious than I, did tell her she was being insane but there has been so much insanity in the world that it worries me. Oh well, we got through it all last year and we will keep on going through it all. Solidarity to my sisters in arms!

Taswama · 27/11/2021 18:48

I hadn't seen the news but DP just told me it's back to masks.I'm getting this sense of deja-vu. Anyone else?

GreenPumpkins · 27/11/2021 18:51

I feel utterly depressed having caught wind of the English news briefing. It's just never going to end.

@Worldgonecrazy Funnily enough I was discussing the new 'scariant' with a friend today. There's always a new one whenever restrictions are being eased or somethings happening ie Christmas. I feel like I'm heading towards becoming a conspiracy theorist myself which is really disturbing and not something I thought I'd ever be.

I have not really got out of the habit of using my lanyard, but it felt so much better not to see everyone else wearing masks. I haven’t been here much lately, struggling with my fibromyalgia and the change in the weather.

I wish we could hibernate until the spring, I am so sick of this endless uncertainty.
