Do you open your bedroom window at night when it’s rainy and windy?

I hate sleeping with my bedroom window closed and fortunately I live in a warm house. It’s torrential rain outside and very stormy. I want to close the window because of the noise but I need the air! What do you do?

I could never live in a bungalow and the thought of sleeping on the ground floor without an open window gives me the shivers.

I live in a country where most houses are what you call bungalows and I have the window open all year around, day and night.

HappyAsASandboy · 21/10/2021 02:18

Window is open pretty much all the time, whatever the weather. I am lucky that my bedroom window is sheltered, so it doesn't matter if it is windy or rainy.

1forAll74 · 21/10/2021 02:30

I like my bedroom window open a bit, love to hear the rain and wind. But have no choice really, old cottage with a broken sash cord on the window, and there is a gap at the top.. but a bit worried about a bat flying in, as we have bats round here !

notangelinajolie · 21/10/2021 02:44

My window is always open, I love a good storm. In fact I go to bed early just to listen. I love the power of weather - I find it calming.

Bloodybridget · 21/10/2021 03:01

My window is nearly always shut at night; I'd like to have it open but can't stand hearing noise from neighbouring houses before I go to sleep - and hovering police helicopters are a frequent occurrence here too. Wind and rain wouldn't bother me.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 21/10/2021 03:45

I don’t because I have a really bad phobia of spiders

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/10/2021 03:48

Yes, I love it.
I’d hate to have to sleep in a ground floor room, where it wouldn’t feel safe to have windows properly open - not just a crack.

Sn0tnose · 21/10/2021 08:51

Ours is open all year round, whatever the weather. Otherwise DH will toss and turn all night because he’s too hot and I’ll wake up with a headache because it’s so stuffy.

Our guttering is knackered and it sounds like someone is standing on our roof pouring buckets of water onto the porch if we have heavy rain. Our neighbour sits outside all night smoking and coughing, our other neighbours are normally screaming at each other and there are usually some police sirens too. DH jokes that if we ever move somewhere quiet, we’ll have to record all the noise and listen to it like ambient noise in order to drop off.

IpanemaPeaHen · 21/10/2021 08:54

I always sleep with the small window open, next to my side of the bed.

RosiePosieDozy · 21/10/2021 08:57

I sleep with mine open. Wide open in summer but only a fraction open in autumn/winter.

As long as the window isn't wide open, I've never had a problem with rain coming in.

SpindelWhorl · 21/10/2021 08:58

Does anyone who always sleeps with an open window ever have the heating on?

It would be terribly cold where I live, aside from the noise.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 21/10/2021 09:06

My bedroom has a double aspect and I always have one of the windows open a crack as I get migraines and the air circulation really helps keep them down. No security concerns as my bedroom is on the second floor of my house (g, 1, 2).

I hate sleeping in hotel rooms with sealed windows, I always wake with a bad head, air con makes it worse as it just dries me out and dehydration adds to it.

DH would rather the window was closed, from an outside noise perspective as he’s a light sleeper but he also insists on having a fan on every night (even in winter), so we each compromise Smile

Brightmagic · 21/10/2021 09:19

I never have the heating on at night, even in the depths of winter. I like it cool in the bedroom although I have a big duvet and a blanket over the top.

I slept all night last night despite the wind and rain although it was definitely a bit nippy when I woke up.

Open in all weathers- it's a sash and I like the bottom section open for cool fresh air. If it's chucking it down, I open the top section a bit to save things getting soaked on my windowsill. Feels claustrophobic to have windows and door shut to sleep

Sn0tnose · 21/10/2021 10:05

Does anyone who always sleeps with an open window ever have the heating on?

No, DH is a human hot water bottle and is also a lump. So he sleeps by the window and I hunker down behind him under a thick duvet. Occasionally have a hot water bottle for my feet if it’s freezing, but anything else just makes it too stuffy.

Kiduknot · 21/10/2021 10:08

It’s not as open as usual to stop the rain coming in, but it’s as open as far as I dare to open it.

Dh usually closes it even further, then I open it more again. It’s our little ritual!

Brollywasntneededafterall · 21/10/2021 10:15

Can't afford the heating on here.... Dc wear pj's and a onesie... We ajev a multitude of bedding and just embrace we live in the Arctic...

longtompot · 21/10/2021 11:57

I have our bedroom windows open all the time, even if they are locked in the open position. I slept so well the night before last I think due to listening to the rain hammering down. I find it soothing. Last night I didn't sleep after 2am but thinking about it, it wasn't raining then.
I always open our living room little window to air the room, even for a short while. Used to drive my dh mad when we had our central heating in as he felt it was a waste of energy. Now we have the wood burner, I have it locked open to help with having some fresh air and now that's not an issue for him.

Aphrodite31 · 21/10/2021 12:52

Sometimes but preferably only a top light.

cleckheatonwanderer · 21/10/2021 13:37

Good god no, how would I get out of bed in the morning if the room was cold from the window being open at night?

I struggle enough as it is.

As I child I remember my Aunt used to have every window in her house open very slightly. It depresses me just thinking about it. It never felt cosy.

TonTonMacoute · 21/10/2021 14:42

Window open all year, no heating, and anyway the radiator in our bedroom hasn't worked for years Hmm

I live very rurally and the ancient sash windows do need replacing and rattle like crazy when it's very windy if they are not wedged firmly in place, but I hate having the window shut.

daisypond · 21/10/2021 14:44

Always have the bedroom windows closed, unless very hot in summer.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 21/10/2021 15:00

I always sleep with window open. I can't stand a stuffy bedroom

EventOfTheSeason · 21/10/2021 15:14

Leave them open unless they bang in a slight breeze. I miss listening to the weather at night.

thecatneuterer · 21/10/2021 16:58

It wouldn't even occur to me to have heating on at night. That would be unbearable. So in the morning I close windows and turn on the heating if it's cold.
