My daughter has struggled with Obstructive sleep apnoea her whole life, it wasnt until we saw an out of hours doctor about tonsillitis that he noticed her tonsils were very large and he advised us to see an ENT doctor, after lots of waiting and referrals we finally got to see one and they decided for her to get her tonsils and adenoids removed as it will improve her sleep and daily life in general. Today is day 8 after her surgery and me and my daughter have decided to write a post in case anyone else is going through the same and wanted an honest account of how she feels and how it all went (also my way of getting her to be honest with me about how she feels! smile) I will write the diary in her words so we are as honest as poss.
Surgery day- No food or drink in morning before surgery, it was ok but i was really hungry. Magic cream on hands i didnt really like because the cling film was not nice. Time for surgery we went upstairs and they put a needle in me to put me to sleep but it hurt so they gave me a teddy bear balloon to blow up and that helped me sleep (gas) i didnt like it because i felt i couldnt breathe and felt long. After surgery i didnt loike it because mummy wasnt there but when she came i cuddled her, i was kind of in pain but not that much. i cant really remember. We went back to ward and i had a nap then woke up and had some food i was able to eat ham and crisps and ice cream, then it was time to go after 3 hours but then i threw up and had to stay another 30 mins. (anesthetic) felt better after. After that we came home and i rested and didnt really want to eat. Had a good nights sleep
Day 2- was an ok day ate a little bit, was in a bit of pain, mummy makes me drink lots of water. Good nights sleep.
Day 3- painful morning, woke up with dry mouth and coughed very hard and started to bleed from my mouth, i was quite scared because i had to go back to hospital, we was there for one day and had to sleep there, they looked after me and made sure i didnt bleed again. they gave me antibiotics in case i had an infection.
Day 4- Pain was ok 5 out of 10 no more bleeding so they let us come home, mummy bought me a teddy from the hospital smile
Day 5- Pain is worse i didnt want to eat or drink or take my medicine which is bad but i had little sips of water through the day and tiny bits of food. (scrambled egg and scotch pancakes) but i didnt really want to. woke up a few times in the night but i feel better after water even though it hurts to drink.
Day 6- was the same as day 5 pain 8 out of 10.
Day 7- woke up in pain but not as bad, i did not cry that morning. I ate more i had a chocolate crepe for breakfast and another one a bit later. had some plain pasta for lunch and no dinner i dont like eating at the moment. Slept well.
Day 8 (today)- Today i feel better than usual and i had a cornetto for breakfast!!! i then had some bread and butter for a snack and some more ice cream.
Today has been really positive for both of us as i can tell shes on the mend, its been very hard getting her to drink, eat and take her medicine. Every time she has to do one of these she gets upset, but it is getting easier day by day. The biggest positive is she is sleeping so much better already and not snoring, snorting or gasping for breath. Sorry for rambling on but it has helped both of us talking through it and hopefully can help someone else too. Fingers crossed for an even better day tomorrow.
