Washing Sliced Mushrooms

Bought a pack of ready sliced mushrooms which doesn’t say on the packet whether they need washing. Would you wash them before use or just wipe with kitchen towel?

I never wash mushrooms.

Not very helpful are we !

I've never washed mushrooms, just brush off any bits of soil before cooking.

Sliced ones? No, I would assume they are washed already as part of the processing.

If it doesn't say on the pack "wash before use" you can assume they're fine already.

They'd get very waterlogged.

butterflyze · 20/10/2021 14:17

Presumably they would have had any compost etc removed before slicing, so I wouldn't bother.

You aren't supposed to wash mushrooms anyway, just give them a wipe.

FourteenthDoctor · 20/10/2021 14:20

I've never peeled or washed a mushroom

Facespook · 20/10/2021 14:26

I never wash mushrooms.
I don’t wash much really-leeks, celery, spinach… that’s about it

PerseverancePays · 20/10/2021 14:36

SLiced mushrooms are prepped for cooking so no I wouldn’t wash them; they’ll get waterlogged, soggy and tasteless.
When they are whole , wipe any compost off with a damp cloth.

BlackInk · 20/10/2021 14:50

Are you seriously considering wiping each individual slice of mushroom?? You may as well buy them whole and wipe before slicing, much quicker!

If bagged veg needs washing before use it will say so on the packaging.

DappledThings · 20/10/2021 14:51

DH washed mushrooms only when I was pregnant because of the tiny risk of listeria in the soil. Is it listeria? Whatever the risk is.

Other than that neither of us wash any fruit or veg. My mother is scandalised by it and yet I remain unmoved.

Never have washed a mushroom

ladymuck111 · 20/10/2021 14:55

I always wipe them never wash. I saw something once that said not to wash mushrooms as they absorb water.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 20/10/2021 15:27

Never washed mushrooms, I just wipe off any soil I can see
My mum used to PEEL mushrooms, until I left home and realised it wasnt a thing

BarbaraofSeville · 20/10/2021 15:40

DP also peels mushrooms, which I agree is madness.

I wipe off visible soil with damp kitchen roll, but don't wash them and don't buy sliced ones anyway.

I wouldn't wash sliced ones but probably wouldn't expect to have to wipe them as paying extra for prepared veg should mean that it's ready to go.

Justcannotbearsed · 20/10/2021 15:42

Never washed a mushroom. Sometimes wipe with a damp cloth if they have a lot of compost on.

bloodywhitecat · 20/10/2021 15:44

Another who never washes mushrooms, I just wipe with a bit of kitchen towel if there is any dirt that needs getting rid of.
