Sick leave

I’m extremely stressed and barely functioning. Think I need to be signed off work to recover. I’ve never had to do this and not sure how it works. Would the GP need to write on the note the reason for my sick leave? Would my employer know?

The Dr would need to write a reason, yes, so your employer would have an idea of what was wrong.

It probably wouldn't go into detail though, so for an operation it wouldn't detail what type of op, just that you needed post surgery recovery time.

Yes, your employer would know as you would have to present the note to them. One was very basic and simply said “ Stress and Anxiety “.

Must add, GP didn’t elaborate on complex PTSD until it was relevant to work ( work related PTSD which work acknowledged).

Perhaps it's different in the UK, but any medical certificate I've had from the GP/a specialist says something along the lines of 'I have examined BritInAus on X date and she is unable to work until X date.' - no details at all.

I am off with stress now and the gp stated "unfit for work until x date" on the note. No mention of stress.
