What do you do in the evening?

I've just spent the evening with DH watching Who do you think you are and sewing. I spend quite a few evenings like that once we've cleared up after dinner. The kids spend time in their rooms (teens). I go out maybe once a week with friends.

I'm quite happy with this but I do sometimes wonder if I'm being a bit lazy! We both used to go out more before covid. Anyway it made me wonder if most people are more productive than us in an evening!

Get from work, dp cooks dinner , often late - eat dinner. Stare at phone, bed.

No energy for anything else

LadyCleathStuart · 19/10/2021 22:21

Do homework with the kids, take them to their various clubs, read with them etc.

They settle down for some quiet time about 6:30/7 while DH and I tidy up or, if the house isn't too much of a mess we will sit and read or chat.

After the kids are in bed we watch TV .

I run ultramarathons or on my rest days make intricate patisserie creations.

No, it's TV and wine. Sometimes I'll throw caution to the wind and have a hot chocolate.

ILiedAboutBeingTheOutdoorType · 19/10/2021 22:27

Dinner, TV, scrolling on phone, bed

EerilyDisembodied · 19/10/2021 22:28

Taxi teens about to various sports clubs. Go to gym or dance classes. In the summer go to allotment. Otherwise just pottering about in the kitchen, catching up with emails etc. Also a bit of crocheting sometimes. I'm quite a restless person, need to be doing something with my hands all the time.

nordica · 19/10/2021 22:32

I often work late (wfh and colleagues in a different time zone). After I finish work, it's usually TV, tidy up a bit, feed the cats, and lots of aimless scrolling on my phone...

This time of year especially I just want to hibernate when it's dark and cold out.

LorenzoVonMatterhorn · 19/10/2021 22:33

Taxi children. Work. Netflix. Sometimes pub if the planets align.

huuskymam · 19/10/2021 22:36

After homework and dinner, it's tv and stitching for me. Teenagers hiding in their rooms, prenteen on xbox before bed and hubby in work till the morning.

Chasingsquirrels · 19/10/2021 22:37

TV, reading, phone, pottering in the garden (summer).
1 night a week I go to Bridge club, and am now in a 4 who play at each others houses probably once a fortnight.
Go out with friends a handful of times a year at most.

OrangeBananaFish · 19/10/2021 22:37

Go to running club a couple of times a week. Watch Netflix the other days. Occasionally I fancy a bath so will do that instead. Around 9 I will watch something with DH.

MissSmiley · 19/10/2021 22:41

Get home from work, peloton, dinner, tv, shower, bed

Tiredandbored · 19/10/2021 22:42

I sometimes often wish for a quiet evening like that.

Today was home from work, immediately go to meet a friend who lost a family member yesterday and needed support, back home to grab a quick bite to eat, take DD1 to her sports activity, back home, make packed lunches for tomorrow, load of laundry on, phone another friend who is having work issues and needed my help, empty dishwasher, reload dishwasher, go to collect DD, get kids ready for bed, teeth brushed etc, prepare dinner for tomorrow as I'm working a long shift, hang laundry up, little bit of housework (need to do more, but don't have time), put bins out, collapse into bed and Mumsnet for 10 mins before falling asleep and dropping the phone on my face.

Then do it all (or similar!) again tomorrow.

Ell17 · 19/10/2021 22:47

I use to work four evenings a week and weekends during first wave of Covid.....now - dinner, TV, wine, bed - much prefer it this way Grin

bettertimesarecomingnow · 19/10/2021 22:57

In the summer we are outside until it's dark working on stuff, animal care etc

In the winter we are cosied up watching films drinking wine. I definitely prefer summer - I'm bored of the dark nights already and it's only October!

I will have to come up with something more interesting to do this winter.... we are too rural for me to go to any classes etc. And the gym shuts at 6pm.

Too far from friends also so it needs to be something I can do indoors.

gogohm · 19/10/2021 22:59

We are going out more now , choir once, pub once usually and dp is out one night at something he did before we met and he's kept up, I sometimes go out that night

Snowdropsandbluebells · 19/10/2021 22:59

Netflix from about 9pm
Up until then busy with kids. Read to them. Sort house out. Tonight I went to lidl Grin

MyOtherProfile · 19/10/2021 23:00

This is all very reassuring!
I so things like laundry before work or in my lunch break. I don't do any household jobs in the evening. Bit of taxi duty for the kids.

Make dinner, tv, scroll on phone, maybe bath, bed.

Babdoc · 19/10/2021 23:07

I’m retired and the kids are now grown up and live 50 miles away. So I have my life back!
I go out to bridge club, table tennis club, theatre and concerts in the evenings. Also play online bridge in national tournaments.
If I have a free evening I like to settle with a good novel, or binge watch favourites on Netflix. During the summer, when it’s light til 11pm (Scotland) I also go for evening walks or work on my garden.

TheLastLonelyBakedBeanInTheTin · 19/10/2021 23:11

On a really good night I spend a little bit of time with the DC, littler ones to bed, bit of 1:1 time with eldest then listen to some audible, tidy and clean up a bit, get prepped for the morning, watch something on the iPad whilst in the bath. Do my skin care, brush and floss my teeth at the mirror, any hair removal, bleaching or tinting. Then a quick diary entry, like literally a 10 minute brain dump onto paper. Short meditation. Then sleep.

On a really bad night I put the littler ones to bed. They won't go to bed. I end up standing in the kitchen stress eating sugar while they cry for no reason. Eventually they pass out from the exhaustion of fighting bed time. I carry them to their beds, put my back out. Eldest is furious with me as got none of my attention. I take my toothbrush, toothpaste and a packet of baby wipes with me to bed to do my teeth and take my make up off. Turn the light off, but end up looking at my phone and next thing I know it's 2 or 3 hours later and one or other DC is awake and has wet the bed or puked everywhere or thinks there might be a spider under their cover or a monster under their bed. Or their thirsty.

Mostly somewhere in the middle! Grin

stealingbeauty · 19/10/2021 23:13

In the summer I am busier in the evenings, walking or gardening.
For other seasons I usually go to bed quite early. I might read or have a bath. I have a hobby one evening a week and will socialise one or two evenings.

TokyoTen · 19/10/2021 23:27

Kids have left home so its me and DP. Finish work at 7ish, cook from scratch, watch the news, knit, language practice (learning a 3rd language), read, bath, sometimes turn out a cupboard...

toastedsandwiches · 19/10/2021 23:40

Housework, gardening, walk the dog.
Then go to the gym, cook dinner, clear up, bath time, story time, put DD to bed, then watch tv and/ or chat.
