How much are people expecting their energy bills to go up by?

I’m trying to budget for the year ahead

We usually pay £100 a month to cover gas and electric which averages out the usage across the winter and summer months

Octopus have said our fox is ending in November and will go on the variable rate and from December our direct debit will be around £130.
I am assuming this will start rising fast from there.

Do we expect that on average our bill will double so to allow £200 a month across the year? Is that sensible or not enough?

Depends where you're starting from. Some fixes that are ending now were set when prices were much cheaper. Your bill will include the calculation that shows how your annual price was worked out and you just need to do the same sums with the new unit prices.

The bill doubling is probably an over-estimate, likely more like around 50% more. Your variable rate is effectively fixed until April as it can only change in October and April each year and the £130 will be based on the current price cap.

Around 40 percent we have been cutting the kids back, teaching them to turn of lights etc and trying not to use the tumble dryer etc recently
