No fetal pole

Hi lovely people.
I went for an early private scan today, the sonographer said I have a gestational sac measuring 5 weeks and 5 days, a small round yolk sac but no sign of a fetal pole.
I’ve gotten myself all upset thinking there’s nothing there but the lady said it possibly could just be a little early but did say she would expect to see something at 5w5d.
My midwife said I can have an NHS scan in two weeks to see if anything appears.
Anyone had anything similar? I’m convinced it’s a miscarriage/phantom pregnancy.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Why having a scan this early? These private places are not always the most reliable. It’s more like 6 weeks for a fetal pole anyway

NFLBingo · 18/10/2021 23:03

5 weeks is quite early to see much, a 12-14 day rescan is pretty standard after seeing a yolk sac. Keep in mind not all machinery outside of hospital settings are as sensitive as ones in (I’ve worked in private clinics and we’ve always explained this beforehand so as to not cause distress).

Thank you for your comments, I was just so excited to see if I could see anything and now I wish I wouldn’t have gone and just waited. I drove an hour to an award winning place, they won private scanning place of the year and I had the internal scan, but still hoping it’s just a little early x

Even award winning places (awards could be for numerous reasons including service) may not have the most advanced machinery even with the probe, and dates at that stage are already so-so, please try to take it easy and not stress yourself further. Flowers

Hang on In there Rach. Pregnancy is a worrying time. You may just have ovulated later than you think.

Good luck.

Thecaravan · 19/10/2021 04:11

I had a scan at 6 weeks (ivf so knew the dates) and there was just a sac. Doc said not to worry and to come back a week later. Obviously I worried anyway but a week later there was a fetal pole and heartbeat. So don't give up hope at all. 5 weeks 5 days is very early and that's if your dates are exact!

Tryingforbabyno1 · 21/10/2021 09:17

I had a scan yesterday at 5 weeks 6 days after some bleeding (IVF pregnancy) and they could only just pick up a yolk sac and fetal pole after lots of looking. It was too small to be measured and I was told they wouldn’t expect any more at this stage. Back again for another scan next week. Fingers crossed that everything looks just as it should at your next scan Smile

driftcompatible · 21/10/2021 09:22

I had a scan at 5 weeks due to suspected etopic (it wasn't). I saw one gestational sac (no pole nor yoke) and nothing else. Week 10 there were two babies. I had a normal pregnancy.

Scanning at 5 weeks is so so so so early and should only be done if there is medical concern.

Just wait for your NHS appointment and keep optimistic. If you had gone a day later you may have seen a pole. Things change by the day that early on!

IsabelHerna · 21/10/2021 10:21

Praying for you dear! Good luck with your next scan!

BlueberrySugar · 21/10/2021 10:29

This happened to my sister.

Went back at 7 weeks and she was there.

She's just been born and as gorgeous as ever Smile

This is why midwives advise against private scans, 3D scans and buying your own doppler… these can all cause more anxiety than reassurance.

Best of luck with your pregnancy. As others said, nothing to worry about at this early stage.

Hi guys and girls, just to let you all know I had an NHS scan at 10 weeks and there was a baby, I’m now 14 weeks and all is going perfectly. Thank you all for you kind words and hope this thread helps someone in a similar situation xx

RajKaur · 15/07/2022 20:16

Hi ladies, I had a bleed and some clotting/ tissue ( ivf dates) i went for an early scan at 5w + 6d. The sono said the gestational sac was measuring very small but could see a york sac so asking me to come back in a week and stay on meds. She did say it doesn’t look promising. Anyone else been in a similar situation? Xxxx

Belladuke · 30/11/2022 15:41

@RajKaur How did it go for you?, I’m in the same situation

Belladuke · 30/11/2022 15:42

@RajKaur I’m not bleeding but a week behind should be 6+1 and only saw sac and yolk sac and the nurse wasn’t very enthusiastic.
