What are you still using that you got a long time ago thinking it will do for now?

I've just put the veg on to steam and realised that I bought the steamer pan I'm using for a fiver in 1999. It was from an end of line / bargain type shop and I remember thinking it would be useful until I got something better.

I didn't think I'd still be using it several times a week in 2021!

£7.99 sandwich toaster which I bought 6 years ago from Tesco as a stop gap while I tried to decide which posh sandwich toaster I wanted. Soon realised the cheapie did the job with no issues at all.

Bed clothes that I bought as a student at a ridiculous low price in a posh shop. I do think that they had made a pricing error but did not want to admit it. I have a kitchen tongs that I bought my first week of university. I still use them (dread day they break). They are much easier to use than any others I have used.
A lot of my clothes are quite old particularly knitwear. I bought plain items when I got my first time and they don't looked dated and have not pilled.

DuvetDayIsEveryDay · 18/10/2021 18:27

Cheap blackout blinds that I put up as soon as I moved into this house - I was intending to replace them with nice ones when I redecorated.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/10/2021 18:29

My glasses. They're so outdated, but it's so hard to find new ones when you can't even see yourself properly.

SwedishEdith · 18/10/2021 18:35

A horrible, ugly £9 toaster I bought over 10 years when ours broke just before getting a new kitchen. I assumed it wouldn't last. Still going.

@purplecorkheart same here with the bedding. And towels. Heals sale was a thing of beauty when I lived in London. Still going strong 12 years later.

Mines a black top from Bay Trading 20+ years ago, bought in a panic for a job interview.

Still my most flattering and reliable black top.

My sofa and dresser bought very cheaply on Facebook after I left DP - because it was available. Actually love them both now and can see me having them for years.

Our kitchen! It was already nearly 30y old when we bought our house. Replacing it was going to be the first big job.

Fifteen years later...

Echobelly · 18/10/2021 18:38

We've had my brother's old dining table and chairs for about 4 years now, which were supposed to be a stop gap. DH prefers the set we had before but it was really heavy and the chairs were so uncomfortable, although this set is really falling apart now so we should do something about it in the next years.

DuesToTheDirt · 18/10/2021 18:40

Our house! We bought it thinking it would be good for the next 5 years. 23 years later, we're still here with no plans to move.

Pascha · 18/10/2021 18:41

Horrible 12yr old Peugeot that was bought as an emergency stopgap after I totalled my precious car 3 years ago. It won't die so we keep on driving it.

Pascha · 18/10/2021 18:42

*previous not precious. No such thing as a precious car.

The front door.

It’s a hideous shiny wood-effect UPVC nightmare with gold furnishings.

Was planning on replacing it when I moved in…

My parents Henry Hoover . Bought two years before my dad died . He died in 1995

MrsAvocet · 18/10/2021 18:53

Our hall carpet.
I hated it when we moved in but it was virtually new and very high quality so I couldn't justify ripping it up right away. But the plan was yo do so as soon as possible.
It is now the only floor covering that is left frommwhen we bought the house. I still hate it but the bloody thing just won't wear out!

35andThriving · 18/10/2021 18:55

I bought 5 plastic bowls from Tesco, 5 years ago, that were marketed as disposable. I bought them for a weekend away with friends. 4 of the 5 have broken. The 5th one however is still going strong.

Frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 18/10/2021 19:02

A set of 4 fugly tea towels, bought by a colleague when I got engaged..... all still going strong after 18 years of marriage! 90 degree wash, the lot... think they are indestructible tbhGrin

They're indestructible, aren't they! As are Hetties, aka Little Henries...

We bought a lot of 'temporary' second-hand furniture when we emigrated 20 years ago. Yes, you guessed it... We have not bought any new furniture since, other than beds and a couple of sofas. I'm fine with that as it has served us well and is more solid than a lot of new stuff we might have bought.
