What are you still using that you got a long time ago thinking it will do for now?

I've just put the veg on to steam and realised that I bought the steamer pan I'm using for a fiver in 1999. It was from an end of line / bargain type shop and I remember thinking it would be useful until I got something better.

I didn't think I'd still be using it several times a week in 2021!

My dressing gown.

Bought in a sale but the colour and size weren't quite right.

That was 15 years ago. Colour and fit are still wrong but it looks like new.

A cheese knife - given to my aunt as a wedding present in 1973, passed on to me when I got married in 1983 because she had hardly used it and didn't like cheese. Still going strong.

A cheap cafeterier I bought in a supermarket, I planned on replacing it with a coffee machine. Have since had a coffee percolator and a Nespresso type machine. Neither of those lasted and weren't worth the faff. Nearly ten years on my cafeterier is still giving me hassle free coffee every morning.

A bicycle I rode today. Purchased in about 1989 for $120. I had had 3 bicycles stolen in preceding 2 years so wasn't hopeful 1989 bike would be mine for long. 1 respray & lots of parts replaced later. Also some Mexican blankets purchased ~1987.

Stretchandsnap · 18/10/2021 20:41

My Henry hoover, we bought it in 2004 to do us
whilst we renovated our flat - 2 houses and renovations later it’s still going strong, even after we left out in the garden accidentally this summer and rained so hard it filled up with water - still works…

peaceanddove · 18/10/2021 21:08

DH!

30 years ago I was suffering with a very badly broken heart. DH approached me in a nightclub, but I wasn't interested cause of my broken heart. But he turned up the following week. And the next. Finally I reluctantly agreed to go on a date with him. It was just meant to be one date.

Well, that one date lasted the whole weekend! DH just blew me away. I fell in love with him that weekend and have never stopped falling in love with him.

I have a China jelly mould that belonged to my great grandmother. Still turns out a good bunny shaped jelly.

TammyTwoSwanson · 18/10/2021 21:11

King-size duvet on our super king-size bed. It's not quite big enough, but it's been a couple of years now and we still haven't replaced it.

Justcashnosweets · 18/10/2021 21:13

A bath sheet my Mum bought me when I went to university in 1995 😬 I love it and can't bear to get rid of it!

ViceLikeBlip · 18/10/2021 21:15

Really ugly dinner set from asda that I got for my first student flat. 27 years later and the bloody things are indestructible!!

Pyewackect · 18/10/2021 21:16

Second hand Land Rover Defender.

Theoldcuriosityshop · 18/10/2021 21:19

My hairbrush, it must be getting on for 40 years now. I've bought new ones, but they are not right for some reason.

Theunamedcat · 18/10/2021 21:20

Ewan83 · 18/10/2021 21:28

A hairdryer which I’ve had for over 20 years and is still going strong! Keep thinking I should upgrade button still does the job as well as did back then.

TheWholeWorld · 18/10/2021 21:29

Love the cheap yet indestructible appliances.

Ours is an Argos toaster - one of the boxed student promotions that came with a kettle in identical grey plastic. Bought 'for now' when me and DH moved into our first flat together... 12 years ago.

The kettle broke last year but the toaster is still going.

I bought an electric whisk, the type with two paddles, hand held one. I got it for £5 from Tesco, about 15 years ago because they would do until unsaved up for a kitchen aid style food processor.

Still have them and all accessories and the original box that it lives in!

Don't have the KitchenAid.... As I still have my electric whisk which has made cakes, meringues, trifles etc wuite happily!

delilahbucket · 18/10/2021 21:32

Kenwood food processor. Picked up on eBay for £30 (new) 13 years ago for weaning DS. Still going strong and used regularly. Love the dough attachment and grater especially.

WendelFong · 18/10/2021 21:40

I still use my original Wombles pillowcase, which is easily over forty years old. Tomsk was my first crush...

Fiercestcalm · 18/10/2021 21:42

An air fryer bought as a cheapie ‘ well let’s see if this does chips’ it’s used every day and my proper oven stands empty apart from bread/ cake/ brownie baking.

DH ‘ helpfully ‘ decided on and bought our replacement washing washing machine 7 years ago ( replacing my Samsung that did a 60 degree wash in 39 minutes) which does 60 degrees in 1 hour 20 ( sigh) will the bloody thing break, no it bloody won’t.

Bought a temporary ‘summer’ queen duvet inner for the dogs’ bed instead of their heavier queen duck down duvet winter bedding. The cheap summer duvet washes really well, is fast drying and neither dog has written to the RSPCA to complain that the quality of their bedding has reduced due to lazy owner wanting an easy wash bed rather than hauling wet feather duvet onto the line every Saturday. Cheapie duvet is here to stay, feather duvet sits in the wiring cupboard looking and feeling expensively redundant.

My mums black pepper grinder... I'm 50 and she bought at least 10 years before as I was born 😀
