Does anyone else hate automatic air freshener sprays?

I just went into our downstairs loo which had an unpleasantly strong air freshener fragrance at which point the automatic dispenser let out another spray of air freshener. Does anyone else hate those things? I have a very sensitive sense of smell and when I walk into the room I feel like the scent has smacked me across the face.

Erm. Take it out then?

ReviewingTheSituation · 18/10/2021 14:16

Why do you have it then?! I agree - the smell of them is vile. So I don't have them in my house. I'm not sure why you have them if you don't like them? There's a very easy solution to your problem....

Why do you have one if you hate them?

I hate most aerosols so don't have them in mu house.

They’re not really suitable for a small room like a downstairs loo. Much prefer to have a window opened for fresh air!
Our work toilets have an automatic one but it’s not overpowering, and no windows, so ok for that situation

Bluntness100 · 18/10/2021 14:18

It’s your loo why did you put it in then and why not just remove it. You’ve written like the loo is nothing to do with you.

whatswithtodaytoday · 18/10/2021 14:19

Yes, they make me feel sick. I'm very sensitive to smells, especially since I had terrible morning sickness.

I got home today to find my husband had bought one and put it in there.

We don't have any air fresheners in our house as I find them very cloying , open a window and let fresh air in.

CatWarbler · 18/10/2021 14:21

They're pretty toxic, aren't they? I wouldn't want one for that reason.

TheDuchessOfDork · 18/10/2021 14:32

Yes. My MIL has them everywhere and I hate them. They squirt at you as you walk past. Yuck.

I have a reed diffuser in my downstairs loo, that's much nicer (and way more subtle!). Other than that no air fresheners or room fragrances, I just open the windows.

The room is very small as it's under the stairs so the ceiling is low at the back. There's no window or extractor. Honestly though I'd rather have the smell of toilet than the smell of air freshener.

Oh no that would be much worse if you had morning sickness as well.

I hate them, I'm tall so usually get them right in the face Envy

Crocky · 18/10/2021 14:53

Hate them with a passion. They kick off my migraines.

Gherkingreen · 18/10/2021 14:53

I wouldn't have a plug in air freshener, spray or anything like that at home, can't stand the fake smell, they're probably toxic and are v cloying.

Opening a window, using bicarb to absorb smells is way more effective and better for health and the environment

berlinbabylon · 18/10/2021 15:08

Yes they're vile. Should be banned in my view as they are both bad for the environment and bad for our health. Same goes for fabric conditioner. Yuck.

Open a window or light a match to get rid of any smells!

StuntNun · 20/10/2021 21:21

I lasted two days before I couldn't take any more and threw the awful thing out of the window.

I hate them too. They are toxic. A simple google search will reveal how toxic they are and the horrible ingredients. I have asthma, and they make me really ill when I am exposed to them. So I avoid them as much as I can. They are are not good for anyone's health. Remove it from your lou. Tell your husband you really don't like it and that it can't be used there. Compromise on an alternative that is to your liking too e.g. one's that do not spray chemicals into the air. Such as the stick alternatives which are milder and safer. 👍
