I used to get it fairly regularly when I lived in the uk & always has the over the counter sachets in.
I now live in Spain , not near a pharmacy BUT I do have bicarb of soda in my baking cupboard. Anyone know how often I should drink a glass of bicarb water ?
Plus any other home treatment tips would be appreciated. TIA.

Once you've got it I find nothing apart from antibiotics works. No idea about frequency of drinking bicarb and water - try googling?

Sundancerintherain · 18/10/2021 07:25

I have googled - it just says to dissolve half a teaspoon of bicarb in a glass of water, no other information. If I see blood in my urine I'll try to get to a gp but it's not easy getting into one atm.

Drinking lots and lots of water/ cranberry juice helps. No sex.

If you make an effort with the non prescription stuff early enough you should be able to get rid of it without antibiotics. I have it approx once every six months and have only needed antibiotics once and that's because I didn't make much of an effort to get rid of it.

Thanks @pjparty , that's what I'm hoping to do, I have the next 2 days clear anyway so I'm going to drink loads , do the bicarb drink and I have a few ibuprofen knocking about.
As for sex 😱

Do you know what type of UTI that you usually get? If caused by e-coli, D-Mannose supplements have helped me avoid UTI I was getting them very frequently. If you can’t get hold of D-Mannose, Lemon Barley Water can help, drink it as strong as you can. If your UTI is E-coli based do not drink cranberry juice as it will make urine more acid you need to make the urine more alkaline. D mannose is a fruit sugar, that attracts the E. coli in your bladder, sticks to it and then it flushes out when you spend a penny. Worked a treat for me, I was always in a cycle of UTI, antibiotics and then UTI coming back. Good luck it’s awful having UTI.

Drink the bicarbonate around 3 times a day.
It will soothe, though not cure.

DazzleDrops · 18/10/2021 08:19

Drinking bicarb as a pp has said will only ease the symptoms, it won't treat the infection.
Drink a glass of water every 30 minutes to help flush it out. Obvs if you see blood in your wee then you need to see a GP.

UTi's are horrible, you have my sympathy. Good luck op!

Thanks all.
@Roselilly36 I can get my hands on lemon barley water, I dont know what type I usually get, I've not had one for years , but I do remember that cranberry juice didn't used to help. I've got a couple of 5L bottles of water in so I will do the one glass every 30 mins.

When I had it I tried cranberry tea, paracetamol but nothing worked apart from antibiotics.. speak to a doctor over there x

paininthebehind · 18/10/2021 11:28

You have my sympathies @Sundancerintherain I am currently in the same boat. It's really uncomfortable and painful. I'm drinking lots of water and using a hot water bottle which seems to be comforting. Am currently waiting for a call back from my doctor as there is blood in my urine. Hope you get some respite soon.

I know it sounds a bit counterproductive but I found drinking loads and holding on for the toilet a bit (not like all day obviously!) actually bought more relief than sitting on the toilet squeezing tiny amounts out. The relief of doing a big wee seemed better!

ShowOfHands · 18/10/2021 12:13

I have them frequently and my consultant said over drinking is not helpful. He said you end up stressing the whole system if you're constantly weeing and it increases inflammation. He said you want to flush it out through being well hydrated and drinking regularly, more than usual to compensate for increased urination but don't guzzle pints and pints all day as you're just asking too much of an already struggling system.

Try vitamin C effervescent tablets if you can. A pharmacist told me to try them years ago and it really does work.

Cranberry juice will do nothing for a UTI, antibiotics are really your best bet.
