Cystitis/Kidney infection?

Hello everyone,

Looking for a little advice I think I have a bout of cystitis or kidney infection, as all day I have had an awful urge to keep going to the bathroom, as the day has gone on the frequency has increased but also the pain when peeing. The last few trips I have also noticed blood in my urine. Now I know I probably need an antibiotic but should i be worried, I was going to hold off on ringing the doc till the morning. Currently lying in bed with a hot water bottle and it seems to be easing the uncomfortable feeling and I'm not rushing to the loo every 5 mins. Should i contact out of hours doc?

You could ring 111 and ask their advice. You might be fine to wait till the morning but equally you might feel very poorly later.
Drink lots and lots (like LOTS) of water or juice, that will really help. Take some paracetamol and stay away from caffeine.

Sounds like cystitis, kidney infection I also had back pain. Ibuprofen and paracetamol with plenty of water and a hot water bottle. Probs need antibiotics.

Hi. GP nurse practitioner here. Sounds like a UTI. It can present in a wide range of ways but the tell tale signs are urinary urgency/frequency, pain when going and lower abdo pain. You might get back pain, you might not. If its mild it can probably wait until tomorrow (although probably no later) and you'll need antibiotics. Tonight you can manage the symptoms with pain killers and drinking well. Sounds like a hot water bottle is working well for you.

Things to watch out for are if you start feeling hot or you get rigour symptoms. Or if you start vomiting. If you get these symptoms you probably need to get medical attention this evening.

Thank you @ImSoMagical and @Letsallscreamatthesistene the hot water bottle definitely doing the trick, hopefully symptoms won't get worse and I manage some sleep.

Definitely anitbiotics from the doctor. At mine you drop a sample in to the nurse who will test for protein and then you get antibiotics. If you can find potassium citrate or sodium citrate at the late night chemists, it turns to alkaline after it goes through your kidneys, and relieves the bladder irritation caused by pesky bacteria excreting acid. Otherwise you can attempt to wash them out/drink to dilute the pH. Hot drinks better than cold after the first pint.

Cranberry juice is not helpful here. The active ingredient is D-mannose, you can buy that it pill form now. Cranberries only have a teeny bit, and it only works on e.coli anyway.
