What was THE INCIDENT at your secondary school?

Inspired by a thread on another website that I randomly came across throught google.

Every school has some sort of 'infamous incident' that passed into the annals of school infamy and was the sole topic of gossip for months if not years.

What was yours?

Mine was the head teacher had an affair with another teacher. Both were married. It all became public on the last day of term and neither of them came back the following term. Just disappeared. No one talked about anything else for a long time.

@Magicpaintbrush

During an A-level English lesson we were studying King Lear, the teacher was reading aloud the passage describing the death of Cordelia, when she suddenly broke down in tears and ran from the room. We all just sort of sat there wondering what to do, then five minutes later another teacher came in to take over. Turned out our English teacher's 20 year old daughter had died in a road traffic accident a few years before and reading about the death of the young woman in King Lear had triggered her. It was so sad.
I can remember in the mid 70s we had a teacher who seemed to us to be older than God. She taught history and we assumed she'd witnessed most of it. One day a plane passed overhead and made a whistling noise . Before we had even registered the sound she had dived under her desk and was shaking and crying. I now know she was only in her forties but had been completely traumatised by living inLondon throughout the Blitz and the whistling sound of the plane had triggered awful memories of incoming bombs for her. To her absolute credit she stayed under the desk for a few moments, then came out, dusted herself off and continued the lesson as if nothing had happened.

Someone in my class took acid in maths one day Confused

Monstermunch67 · 18/10/2021 21:36

We had 3 at our all girl senior school. The first was when our rather eccentric PE teacher completely lost her shit with one of the girls after some very minor backchat, and basically beat her up.

The 2nd was when our very stern maths teacher had a bit of a careless whisper in a public toilet and was charged with gross indecency.

The 3rd was pretty horrific. One of the school support staff (she used to collect dinner tickets and monitor the line waiting to go to lunch) had reported a neighbouring family to the police for something. One of the 6ft plus sons got into the school and beat the living daylights out of her with a metal rounders base.

Several teachers heard the screaming and ran to the area but even the male teachers were too afraid to intervene. She recovered, which was a surprise as she was an older lady, but it shook the staff and pupils for a long time.

One horrific one was this:

At my school there was a very big, straight staircase with very small landings. A new boy with behavioural issues had recently moved to the school and hated our head of year. She was nice, but had understandably become quite frazzled due to being far along in her pregnancy. One day she told him off in lesson as she was leaving the classroom, he followed along trying to argue with her. She was a very small woman and it ended with him pushing her halfway down the stairs. She lost the baby, and unsurprisingly never came back. I think about her a lot Sad

Strangeways19 · 18/10/2021 21:41

Well.. at my secondary school a teacher groomed two 14 year old girls & it transpired he was regularly paying them £5 each for giving him a hand job in his office.
He left had a breakdown & ended up in a psychiatric hospital. The girls unfortunately always then had a reputation after this. Very unfair I know but it was the 80's & there was a lot of ignorance around

Grandma60 · 18/10/2021 21:42

Two teenage students from my year group ran away together. Made the local news. My mother was horrified, although she didn't know either of them.
English teacher went off with 6th former.
One poor girl involved in car accident after taking her exams. I remember seeing her name when the results were published and feeling so sad and sorry for her family.

Strangeways19 · 18/10/2021 21:47

Also, there was a history teacher who had a relationship with a 6th form girl, they even lived together.
My son, on his last day at secondary school
( 2000's), the school had chickens that they look after, so they left the live ones in the headteachers office & put frozen ones in the coop.
I thought this was hilarious.

Scottsy100 · 18/10/2021 22:00

Ours had a couple

  1. One of the girl pupils ran off with the married caretaker

  2. we all went on strike and needed up in the local newspaper because we were protesting about not being able to wear our coats while we walked around the school and we didn’t have lockers and we had too much to carry. We got told of we didn’t go back to lessons we would all be suspended but at the age we were that seemed quite appealing so we all just buggered off up town and got people to buy us alcohol 😂

MdNdD · 18/10/2021 22:10

Kid brought a machete to school and threatened to kill a few of the teachers. We were all locked in classrooms till he was found. The gossip was about the twisted stuff he did outside of school. All of us who were there on the day lived the experience, especially the look of fear in some teachers’ eyes. No gossip needed.

It was the primary school filthy p*ile teacher that got the most gossip…

pinkstripeycat · 18/10/2021 22:29

Boy (aged 15) a year above me at school and some other kids (at lease one girl my age aged 14) terrorised a local shop keeper. When they set fire to his shop with his family upstairs he hunted down the boy and murdered him and tried to cut his head off.

Alleycat1 · 18/10/2021 22:34

Just remembered another. Girl who sat next to me in maths class suddenly went mad, ranting and raving and had to be subdued and her parents called. She had called down and I was asked to sit with her until they arrived. She confided in me that she was pregnant. Her uncle had raped her but nobody in the family would believe her. She showed me the bruises where she had been beaten to make her reveal the name of her 'boyfriend'. She was taken away never to be seen again. All these 55 years later I still wonder what happened to the poor girl and the baby..

A teacher died in a car accident.

A new technology teacher was locked in his walk in cupboard and left for an hour. He then left.

A boy jumped out of a 1st floor window because his french teacher was having a go at him.

Rubyupbeat · 18/10/2021 22:43

Primary school and the boy who pooed in the art cupboard.....

Hushhush89 · 18/10/2021 22:53

Will not go into detail but it involved a girl and a battered Mars bar 🤢🤢

Girl had left school by the time I started and it was still talked about when I left

DirtyDancing · 18/10/2021 23:10

Mr V the a science teacher who was brilliant but nuts blew up part of the science lab going OTT with an experiment. I think it was slightly embellished, however, he was very easily led astray and would always add more chemicals when we encourage him!

LittleNC · 18/10/2021 23:17

Ha, so many. I went to a private all girl school…

The 14 year olds who appeared topless in Nuts magazine after being accosted by photographers whilst drunk in a nightclub

A girl in my year who disappeared halfway through sixth form - she went to marry her boyfriend then moved away to avoid a possible arranged marriage by her parents

The teacher who was driven to a breakdown by a class who decided to put feminine hygiene products all over his classroom… he disappeared for a few weeks after that and the whole class got detention (famous because it’s the only time detention was ever issued!)

The RE teacher who left his wife for the doe eyed, 20 something English teacher (who regularly came into the 5th form block asking where he was, assuming incorrectly that we would be discreet)

The 13 year old who got pregnant and was asked to leave the school

The business teacher who had an affair with his sixth form pupil and was sacked, and I believe prevented from teaching again

The 15 year old pupil expelled after being caught shagging an older bloke in a nearby tourist attraction… whilst in school uniform

Oh and my form tutor used to check if our skirts were too short by dropping a pencil at the front of the class, ordering us to turn around, bend over and pick it up, and if the class could see our underwear, it was too short

The same form tutor taught us the wrong GCSE text for our exams… she was removed from the school and we had to have lunchtime lessons for the last month of term to cram it all in… I still got an A* though!

My best friend went to a very religious school. Turned up outside one day to meet her from my school at the end of the day. News crews, reports and papers outside taking pictures and trying to speak to people. Turned out the priest from the church attached had two children with one of the ex students. He left/was out after that they married shortly after.

At my own school (very sad could be triggering) years before I was there. A student was being bullied by a teacher so the story is told. She broke in and hung herself in the out court in front of the teachers classroom. She knew the teacher would be first on site the following day. She was. The teacher died the following year I have no idea how but the rumour said cancer.

On a lighter note. While I was in primary school one of the year 3 teachers turned up at school one Monday morning hammered! Mum said she swayed into the school and left through a back door 10 mins later as the all the kids went in. Never seen again.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHaands · 19/10/2021 00:18

@OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias

We had a recurring joke that was played a couple of times a year, where someone would go and get a horse off the nearby common and persuade it into the ground floor of the teaching block. When the bell went for break, everyone would pile down the central staircase and then form a giant horse-based logjam until someone took the horse away.

By the time my brother went to secondary, there was a variation on this where someone would knock at the door of a classroom and when the teacher opened it, there would be a horse outside.

My school was rough as bags 😁

I’m laying in bed snorting (rather horsily actually ) at this Grin

Hi, many incidents , my elder sister was "cradle snatched by our art teacher a lovely guy from Durham , had a fine long life until he died of Alzheimers , had 3beautiful daughters later becoming actors. We had an end of term prank where strong sixthformers hoisted an old Austin 10 onto the bridge across tha arch entance . Or a string of girls Knickers suspended above the double stairs , all quite boring 😅😅😅.

Rosebel · 19/10/2021 08:31

Deputy head was sleeping with a sixth former. He had a daughter at the same school. He left his wife for her but apparently two years later she went off to university

dejacqueray · 19/10/2021 08:34

Our head girl married the French teacher. Bear in mind that she was 18 and he was 24 and nobody thought it was slightly odd. The engagement was announced in assembly and everyone wished them well. It was an all girls school and quite a few of us had dates with our male teachers. It was a different era

BertieBotts · 19/10/2021 08:45

Oh actually I've just remembered a really sad one but it wasn't my school, it was when I'd moved to college.

Two lads from a local secondary school (age 16 or so) went out one night, argued, then allegedly one left the other near a river to go and meet some other friends. When he came back the other boy was gone. The river was dredged three times and his body eventually turned up (further down the river) a month later. IIRC he was missing all the way through December and found some time in January. I remember being so affected by it even though I hadn't known him - a group of my friends from college had been to the same school as these two lads and I think it was the first death of someone my age I was really aware of, as well as following all the local news and speculation about it and just thinking of his poor family surrounded by all the Christmas celebrations etc.

The talk was that the other boy pushed him in. There was a court case and it went on for months but he was cleared. Whatever happened it was utterly and desperately sad.

BertieBotts · 19/10/2021 08:56

We had two IT teachers. One of them was a bit haphazard and disorganised. He was also Asian but unfortunately lived in a very racist part of Coventry. He was absent for an extended period of time, nobody knew where he had gone and someone uncovered a newspaper article confirming that his house had been burnt down in a racist attack. (He was quoted in the article, so not dead/injured).

Some time later the other IT teacher explained to us, clearly exasperated by the absence, that we would have to redo our GCSE coursework because the other teacher had had it "when he vanished in a puff of smoke" a girl responded (quick as a flash) "Like his house!" The IT teacher had the grace to look embarrassed.

NorthbyNorthwest22 · 19/10/2021 10:22

Very worrying how most of these stories involve male teachers and female pupils.
Mine is just that! Early 90s and a new young (mid 20s) art teacher started at my school. I was in my 5th year at that point. Rumours started a few weeks later that a girl a year younger was spending alot of time in his classroom at break times and lunch times. A friend of my younger sisters said they would go into the art storage room and close the door. We thought it was funny at the time! A few months later the girl suddenly left the school and no one knew why.

Didnt think any more about it till 17 years later and i was the manager of a company that took on a new employee that i vaguely knew. Several years younger but had lived near me growing up. Long story short she was married but currently getting a divorce from said art teacher because he had to move school again because of accusations of inappropriate behaviour. When i asked how they met she said at school!! She was 14 when he first started flirting with her. He had to leave that school because her parents had come home early from a night out to find them both in the bath! She was 15.

Second story was one of my friends during our last year of school got pregnant. She hid it from everyone apart from a group of about 6 of us but i think most other girls in the year knew. She hid it right up till the very end until the PE teacher caught sight of her getting changed and had an absolute fit! She was taken straight to hospital and was at that point 39 weeks. She had a little boy a few days later. See her occasionally, shes still with the same guy. Married with 2 other children
