So would’ve read in late 80’s I’m thinking.
All I can remember is that a family of mum and dad with quite a few children and they ran a school just for them. An inspector or something came along one day and all the children had to pretend they were different kids in different classes etc to fool the inspector that there was more children than just the family of children.
All I can remember is one child is called Trixie??

So vague, I’m wondering if I imagined it!

It's from the Ahlbergs' Happy Families series.

Mr Tick the Teacher. All the kids had 'T' names.

Amazing! I too have a book I am trying to identify and hope that I'll get the same luck. Same era. It's about 4 coloured shapes and starts something like 'mr rectangle, triangle, miss circle and miss square / were walking to the sea one day to taste the salt sea air'. Any ideas?!

Dayrider · 16/10/2021 19:59

A google search and could this be it?

The whole series are really really good and stand up to re-reading in case you have any kids, nieces/nephews, etc. Or just fancy re-reading them yourself :)

I loved these as a kid but didn't remember this one. My children brought them home though and I adore this one.

I wonder whether some tiny schools on Scottish islands etc might really be like this Grin

Ah it's not those but thank you for trying! And maybe I need to get a copy of yours anyway, they sound gorgeous

I've been trying for years to find or remember this rhyme that I read to my daughter in the 80's.
So far I've got: Miss Triangle, Miss Rectangle, Miss Circle & Miss Square
Went walking down on Shipshape Shore to taste the salt sea air
They spoke of this, They spoke of that from ABC to Z
But most of all they spoke about the day they would be wed
...
My boy so fair then said Miss Square
...
and the last line was something like
So what might do for me and mine
Wont do you and and yours.

Dayrider · 30/10/2021 22:52

@GrandadSoon I think I’m gonna take up googling searching full time! Is this it?

Love their books. I used to work for them in the mid eighties, lovely couple.

Hi. I don't know if anyone has already told you the name of the book? It was a lovely little poem written by Charles Causley in 1977 called The Song of the Shapes. I had it as a child too in the 80s. Then I bought a copy off eBay for my son a few years ago
Hope that helps

Pfernay79 · 28/11/2023 22:46

This is the poem that I mentioned. You can get it on Amazon
