Is a sodastream worth it?

I like drinking fizzy water, however I hate the plastic waste by buying bottles. Would it be better to buy a soda stream, or does the co2 shortage make it pointless?
Is it expensive to buy the canisters etc?

We switched a few years ago. It’s no cheaper than bottled sparkling but we do it for environmental reasons. We’ve had no difficulty getting gas, we have a subscription so they send us replacement bottles automatically (we return empties).

We got our subscription on a deal a couple of times, otherwise it’s about £10 a month if you use a lot.

Love my soda stream. Fizzy water on tap. I don't rate the flavoured concentrates but love it with a bit of lime juice. It gets a lot of use and we buy replacements at The Range, and I think our local Asda has started doing them as well.

I think it depends on how drinkable your tap water is? I live in a very hard water area, the tap water is nasty. I overlooked this when I bought the sodastream which means it doesn't really get used. But if I lived somewhere with reasonable tap water it would have been a much better idea!

We also have one for environmental reasons. We get refill gas canisters from the Argos inside our local Sainsbury's. I've had it a couple of years and must have saved hundreds of plastic bottles from landfill in that time.

If you have rubbish tap water you could always get a brita filter jug or a fridge that filters water when you next replace it.

We got the cheapest one and it was so crap we sent it back after a week. So disappointing. Didn't hold tlits fizz at all.

More expensive ones may be better?

CottonSock · 17/10/2021 11:50

Sent ours back. Totally hopeless
My sister tried the more expensive one and not impressed either

MyOtherProfile · 17/10/2021 11:51

Another fan here. Love the fizzy water and the rest of the family love the different flavours.

TheVanguardSix · 17/10/2021 11:54

I just buy sparkling water in glass bottles.
The tap water is so hard where I live.
I haven't owned a SodaStream, so I probably shouldn't even be on this thread. Grin But I have been tempted to buy one. Just not sure, with my tap water's taste and nasties and all. Watching with interest!

I love mine, I keep still water chilled ready to fizz rather than pre fizzing and letting it go flat. I have it in my chillys bottle at work too. Love it with cordial or in a spritzer as well.

No they don't hold their fizz like "proper" bottles of fizzy water. But it stays fizzy for a day or so and the whole point is to just make it when you want some, so it doesn't really need to hold the fizz for long.

I love ours, we use it loads and I'm sure I've saved loads of plastic bottles as I've only bought about 6 bottles in the 10 years that I've had the SS

Theblackdogagain · 17/10/2021 16:28

Thanks everyone, I do live in a hard water area so it sounds like I'll hate the taste of the fizzy water as much as I hate normal tap water.
