Trousers for skinny teenage boys

Yes I know this is a perennial MN problem which has been done to death but I'm in search of some up to date advice please.

Just failed dismally with some H&M joggers for 16 year old son. He's not that tall with a 29 inch inside leg 28 inch waist. In theory he should fit standard teen sizes but in practice they all hang off his hips and fall down. He needs the waist for 13 year olds and the length for 15 year olds I think so any where that does longer length casual trousers for 13 year olds would be good.

He's got ASD so getting him to try things on in shops or compromise on pulling in trousers with drawstrings is a nightmare, and left to his own devices he'd happily walk around in mid-calf trousers or just refuse to leave the house. I just need to buy a whole bunch of stuff online and bribe him into trying it in, and then get duplicates of anything that fits. Alternatively I guess I could get jeans in the right leg length and have the dry cleaner take them in at the waist?

Where do people recommend? At this point I'm inclined to say money is no object.

Bohoo man do an XS so man size length but smaller on the waist. I’m vaguely remembering my skinny, tall teen having some from there.

All on this page should be Xs

My skinny boys buy theirs from primark and top shop. Same size as your boy.

H&M do jeans which are ‘age 14+’ and have an adjustable waist. The often do not have in store so I order a batch online for my son to try. I also get stuff for him from ASOS as they do a 26” waist but the H&M ones are better as they are adjustable. Have had recommendations for next too

my son is 14 and very very skinny, levis skinny or slim jeans fit him great, they are usually cheaper on amazon.

EvilRingahBitch · 16/10/2021 16:35

Thanks all, that's really helpful. I did look at the H&M jeans in store but they looked like they were going to have too much spare material in the waist which would be uncomfortable. School trousers with adjustable waists are OK because the material is so thin.

I might try some Levi's. I hadn't thought of Primark strangely enough but that's a great idea. If I'm going to do a lot of buying and returning I'd rather do it in store rather than faff around with post office queues so I'd rather avoid ASOS and Boohoo if poss.

My skinny boy wears mostly combat style trousers and joggers so they can be pulled in with the cords. Next, Primark, Champion and a cheap European brand called Takko seem to be the slimmest cuts. H&M seem to have got bigger/ wider so that's out now.

I can't imagine getting him into a pair of jeans or trousers, even the adjustable ones. Sometimes I even cut into the band and string an extra elastic in there too to make sure they can't fall down.

Fortunately he has a decent, high sort of bum which helps keep things on but it is a constant stress finding things he'll both wear and be comfortable in. Underpants are also difficult as I find it hard to get the Y front/ brief type elasticated ones now he's older. Its all baggy boxer shorts that slip off.

Primark do -15-16 in kids. For men’s Next online, River island, tkmaxx xs, Calvin Klein do 28 jeans online

Imitatingdory · 16/10/2021 17:26

For school trousers you need M&S extra long trousers, then you can size down on the waist for the right length.

CMOTDibbler · 16/10/2021 17:39

Next Mens online is great - their short fit is 29" inside leg and they do 28" waist. I have the opposite problem with a very tall and slim teen, and he's very happy with his Next joggers and jeans

QueenofLouisiana · 16/10/2021 17:43

Uniqlo and Boohoo worked well for us at that sort of size. He’s now a 32w and 34l which is a bit easier!

cantkeepawayforever · 16/10/2021 17:53

All the places that used to work for DS (at his most extreme, 26" waist, 36" inside leg) are no longer trading!

I can recommend anything with a good turn up, that can be turned down again. Burton used to do 26" / 34" chinos with turn-ups, which were great, and in general their trousers were pretty slim fitting, so even 28 waists weren't impossible.

Oddly, Sports Direct was often useful - Kangol brand chinos seemed to be cut very cheaply so were nice and small even in the 28" waist size, and if the length isn't such an issue for you, should be OK. DS used to wear their 3/4 length children's shorts as short-length shorts as an older teen, which was bizarrely successful.

cantkeepawayforever · 16/10/2021 17:54

(DS is now early 20s. He can now wear 30" waists with a belt, which has made a HUGE difference in availability - though he mourns that he can never find his size in charity shops!)

HarrisMcCoo · 16/10/2021 18:48

Bought DS 14 jeans out of Asda and a belt (had to punch an extra hole in the belt!). He is fine with this.

30" waist is the smallest size they seem to do. 34" leg for the length. Really difficult buying him clothing.

HarrisMcCoo · 16/10/2021 18:52

He can probably get away with 32" leg...all trial and error!

EvilRingahBitch · 23/10/2021 16:26

Just coming back to say thanks for your help and Primark came up trumps with a pair of size 14-15 joggers and also a pair of size 14-15 skinny jeans which will be respectable enough and warm enough to wear out to lunch in the winter. He even went and looked in the mirror to check himself out!

Next skinny trousers are good.

WarmAndFluff · 24/10/2021 00:03

We found that M&S works well because you can get long skinny trousers with adjustable waists, and Next is good because they seem to measure on the slimmer size anyway.
