Can anybody tell me what (late 80s/early 90s) song this melody is taken from? It's playing on my son's game and driving me mad that I can't name it...

I don't know but now it's driving me mad too! [laugh]
Could be something like Sade? Hopefully someone will be along in a bit who knows.

BuckyBarnesArm · 16/10/2021 08:47

It just sounds like generic 'musak' to me rather than a specific song?

Oh sorry @TheThinWhiteDutchess! Yes, it's something like Sade... Money's Too Tight to Mention is close too, but not right.

@BuckyBarnesArm the track I linked to is just generic, but the tune is extremely close to, err, something else.

Sounds like Shakatak - Night Birds?

StCharlotte · 16/10/2021 09:07

@StCharlotte

Sounds like Shakatak - Night Birds?
And yet not Grin
MabelStark · 16/10/2021 09:07

The main bit sounds a lot like Fly like an Eagle by Seal from 1996

JaninaDuszejko · 16/10/2021 09:09

Have you tried getting google to listen and tell you?

DownWhichOfLate · 16/10/2021 09:11

Married With Children by Oasis?

Notgoingonholiday · 16/10/2021 09:11

I was going to say Fly Like An Eagle too...

Mc1980 · 16/10/2021 09:14

It's not Fly Like An Eagle? (almost can hear the chorus)

SoupDragon · 16/10/2021 09:25

@Mc1980

It's not Fly Like An Eagle? (almost can hear the chorus)
Yes, It does sound like that
Tenpintonpin · 16/10/2021 09:31

It's close to Fly Like an Eagle, but that's not the song I'm thinking of, sorry. I've tried singing it to Google but no joy (unsurprisingly, giving my singing voice).

Have you tried Shazam? Play the song to the app and it may recognise it.

doodlejump1980 · 16/10/2021 09:35

Slowed down version of “I like to party, I like, I like to party?”

Tenpintonpin · 16/10/2021 09:41

I played the track from my son's game to Shazam, and that came up with the 'cover' version I've linked to at the top of the thread. I've tried humming the tune back to Shazam in case that came up with something else, but it didn't.

I think it is a original composition by Peter Godfrey. He was a composer who seems to have made loads of this sort of thing for games/adverts/films etc.

SoupDragon · 16/10/2021 09:49

It's just triggered a memory of a particular song in your head.

Tenpintonpin · 16/10/2021 09:53

Yeah, I think it's an original composition - wouldn't want to besmirch Mr Godfrey in any way - but it just happens to be v similar to something else and it's driving me nuts.

lollipoprainbow · 16/10/2021 09:56

Dance little sister by Terence Trent Darby ?!

sashh · 16/10/2021 10:03

It sounds like something from Yellow Magic Orchestra.

kindlyensure · 16/10/2021 10:03

It's got a kind of Stevie Wonder vibe or perhaps Space Cowboy Jamiroquai.

The beginning bit sounds a bit like the call and response thing you get in something like Clint Eastwood (Gorillaz). In fact, just sang that along to this and it kind of works (Perhaps that's just my warbling!)

Tenpintonpin · 16/10/2021 10:14

So I've got it, and @SoupDragon was right, it's not quite as close as I remembered Grin Anyway, please all do enjoy this small slice of Swiss mid 80s jazz pop fusion:

(The chorus around 1 min mark was the bit stuck in my head)

It's library music.

...Which isn't music to read books by. It's cheap and available off-the-shelf backing for film and TV. Producers on a budget call music libraries and ask if they have anything that sounds a bit like xxx, where xxx want a fortune for the rights.
