What sort of massage do I need?

My upper back has been in a lot of pain for about 2 months. I think it’s muscular. I’m going to book a massage but not sure if I just need a back massage or a deep tissue/sports massage? I’ve never had either so no idea which is right.

If you've found this page in your search of the massage oils that have been recommended by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best massage oils useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

Deep tissue. I have one every four weeks; they can be painful, but help a lot.

You need a deep tissue massage from a properly qualified sports massage therapist (despite the name we treat all muscular problems not just sports related issues). The techniques are similar but a qualified sports massage therapist will have a good knowledge of anatomy and physiology and can help work out if it is just muscular or if you need to be referred on to a GP or physiotherapist.

Deep tissue all the way. They're uncomfortable but satisfying.
