Potential Scam? Car insurance

My car was broken into a few weeks ago and insurance arranged for car to be collected to repair/replace missing items (radio) and provided a courtesy car. This is the first time I've had to make a claim on the insurance.

Since then most of my communications have been directly with the repair company. I last spoke to them earlier this week where they told me my car would still be a few more days. Up until now, I haven't paid anything. My excess will be due on return if the car.

Today, I received a phonecall where the Caller ID was withheld. The man on the phone said where he was from very quickly, I only picked up 'insurance', but he asked if he was speaking to 'my name' and proceeded to state my car reg which was also correct. He then said he needed to finalise a few more details with me to sign off and get everything finished (this part confused me as I had a previous phonecall stating everything was already signed off). So he asked me if I was driving the car at the time of the incident. So I said no it was parked and he said 'oh so it was unattended' and I said 'the car was broken into' and he immediately hung up.

I was with my hairdresser at the time who said it seemed very weird that they would ask who was driving the car when they already had the details, then hang up without calling back, and call from a withheld number. Im going to call my insurance to double check but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this? I assume if we'd stayed on the call he may have asked for card details?

As I've never been through this before I may well have handed them over and feel a bit stupid now

It was probably either a scammer, or someone hoping to bamboozle you into getting a "coutesy" car that you didn't need and ultimately your insurer would refuse to pay for, leaving you with a bill.

Have just gotten off the phone with the insurance company (after waiting nearly an hour 😭) and they've told me there was no call made by them saying it was potentially phishing.

But the guy did say that he had no idea how they could have gotten hold of my details as they don't pass it on to anyone else Confused also told me that only the car repair company would be ringing and they wouldn't call from a withheld number.

So I checked about payment and was told the car repair would expect to take payment over the phone, but to hang up and ring them on their number if I feel unsure about it given what's happened. He's also logged it and sent me an email with a link to report it.

Yikes. This man sounded very official.
