How do you buy music these days?

I know this is probably a v silly question. I really only listen to the radio, I don't buy music.
Dd uses Spotify.

I'd like to buy her the new ABBA album for Christmas.
But I don't know how!.

Cds are old fashioned, she'd have to listen to it in our dining room.
So how do I buy a music gift for her?
Transferring her money and telling her to download it to her phone doesn't seem like much of a gift!?

So please, help a technophobe buy a music. Thanks

If she uses Spotify she will be able to just add the Abba album or whatever music she likes whenever she likes - people don’t “buy” music as such anymore. You could get her a Spotify gift card which will give her more months of subscription etc.

(Spotify is like having a huge virtual HMV or whatever music store on your phone- and you just add whatever music you like to your playlist and can play it whenever you like).

Thanks. Her dad pays her subscription, so that's all covered.
So basically need to think of a different gift, this is a but of a non starter really?

Being very honest (and as a Mum to an 18 year old dd who sounds similar…!) yes probably. It’s so awkward to buy things now as everything is online!

Agree, Christmas shopping is harder now CDs and DVDs are no longer a thing.

Maybe if the budget runs to it you could buy tickets to take her to the Abba Voyage experience in London next year?

Whichcatthatcat · 14/10/2021 06:29

Dd is also 18. No idea what to get her!!!

I’m pretty old fashioned and still buy albums on CD, I like having a physical copy in my collection. You can then import the CD onto your PC and transfer it onto your phone/MP3 player.

What does she listen to music on? Could you get her a fancy Sonos speaker?

ejhhhhh · 14/10/2021 06:32

Yep, buying music isn’t really a “thing” anymore if you have Spotify. In theory, you could buy a digital download from somewhere like Amazon or iTunes if you want digital music to keep, but it would be a bit of a rubbish present if they have Spotify.

Whichcatthatcat · 14/10/2021 06:33

Her laptop doesn't have a cd player. Apparently that's old fashioned too. And budget doesn't stretch as far as the live event, although that would be fabulous

Maybe some Voyage merchandise then? I like the poster: shopmerch.abbavoyage.com/

Whichcatthatcat · 14/10/2021 06:40

TangledUp789, that link is amazing! They obviously understand their market, and you can buy it on cassette! I love it.

( not for dd though, I don't think she has every played a cassette and we don't even own a tape recorder, but I love the fact that you can buy them)

I think this is a good idea.

I stream everything now (and apparently I'm a PITA to buy for now). I'm slowly building a collection of Bluetooth speakers in every room of the house.

Whichcatthatcat · 14/10/2021 06:54

Don't think I'll go with a sonos speaker.
A quick glance bring the cheapest at £170, which is way over my budget.
And she tends to listen to stuff on a small earphone. She keeps one in one ear practically constantly as far as I can tell.!

Mine's the same, we do have some Sonos speakers but the teen DC never use them, just earbuds. I only really use the one in the kitchen for radio, for actual music I prefer earbuds too, they are DH's thing.
