Can anyone tell me which A level subjects are classed as social sciences?

Geography, Sociology, Psychology

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 13/10/2021 19:55

Economics, sociology, psychology, geography

Delphigirl · 13/10/2021 19:56

And probably politics, no?

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 13/10/2021 19:58

Oh yes, and that one!

Thanks. We've googled so much to try to find a definitive list! Dd1 (17) in U6 decided she wanted to do nursing after starting her A levels. A lot of universities ask for a science or social science....she's doing History, Religious Studies & English Literature.

Is health and social care an A level nowadays?

I did public services at college and social care studies at uni, and I think both of those were considered social sciences

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 13/10/2021 20:17

Im also a nurse so any q's you have I could try to help!

newnameagain99 · 13/10/2021 20:26

Letsallscreamatthesistene - she's now wondering if she should apply if none of her A levels are relevant.

I would phone the uni and ask how strict they are about it

Isn't geography a humanities rather than a social sciences subject?

RedRum27 · 13/10/2021 20:52

Sociology, psychology, economics, politics and criminology sometimes as well? We class Geography as a humanities at the school I’m at.

VanCleefArpels · 13/10/2021 21:37

You can see the sense in requiring a science qualification for a medical degree. Not sure why eg sociology would be a better qualification for nursing than RS though - seems very odd

newnameagain99 · 13/10/2021 22:11

I can't see much benefit of geography over history or RS. She's going to apply anyway as on reading again most say "preferably" have a science or social science.

I can see how psychology or sociology might be useful…less so geography.
If she doesn’t have the right a levels there are usually pre entry courses, foundation years etc.
