Do you have a favourite Halloween poem?

Toying with the idea of getting the DC to learn a short poem for Halloween so they can earn their sweets! Cruel, I know! They both need some practice at speaking in front of others and this way they have an incentive.

Thinking of something max 20 lines long, or maybe a short story. Nothing too scary or gory! Any suggestions?

I went to school at a place where 'Poems' was a punishment. You had to learn a poem and recite it in front of the class.

Fun.

I remember this from primary school:

Halloween's coming! Halloween's coming!
Skeletons will be after you!
Witches cats and big, black bats,
Ghosts and goblins too!
Miaow, miaow, miaow go the witches cats,
Oo, oo, oo, oo,oo, ooo oo, ooo!
Flap, flap, flap, go the big, black bats,
Oo, oo, oo, oo, oo!
BOO!!

It's was a song I remember doing
"The witches of Halloween... oooo ooo
The scariest you've ever seen...ooo ooo
We'll creep about at night
To give you such a fright
The witches of Halloween.. ooo ooo!

I suppose witches could be replaced with vampires/werewolves/monsters?

Not quite sure how this is relevant! It's not as a punishment, it's to earn a cauldron of sweets. And it's not in front of his class, it's in front of DH, DC and me Confused

Alright. I was recounting a memory that your post reminded me of. But you sound a bag of laughs.

Its Halloween! Its Halloween!
The moon is full and bright
And we shall see what can`t be seen
on any other night:
Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls,
Grinning goblins fighting duels,
Werewolves rising from their tombs,
Witches on their magic brooms.

Or this one

Its late and we are sleepy, The air is cold and still. Our jack-o-lantern grins at us Upon the window sill. Were stuffed with cake and candy
And weve had a lot of fun, But now its time to go to bed
And dream of all weve done. Well dream of ghosts and goblins
And of witches that weve seen, And well dream of trick-or-treating
On this happy Halloween.

Yes but it’s in Irish we've already 4 languages in the mix MrsRobbieHart so that might be a bit unfair!

Thank you all! I'm going to let them read and choose one. I wonder if they'll choose the ones I think they will!

The Ride-by-nights, by Walter de la Mare

Up on their brooms the Witches stream,
Crooked and black in the crescent's gleam,
One foot high, and one foot low,
Bearded, cloaked, and cowled, they go.
'Neath Charlie's Wane they twitter and tweet,
And away they swarm 'neath the Dragon's feet,
With a whoop and a flutter they swing and sway,
And surge pell-mell down the Milky Way.
Between the legs of the glittering Chair
They hover and squeak in the empty air.
Then round they swoop past the glimmering Lion
To where Sirius barks behind huge Orion;
Up, then, and over to wheel amain
Under the silver, and home again.
