Squid Game

There has got to be irony in western viewers being entertained by the grim deaths of Koreans on a TV network owned by rich white people on a show which criticises the poor being used for entertainment by the rich...

I just finished this about 10 minutes ago and thought that was the point?

Very much like the Hunger Games.

gardeninggirl68 · 12/10/2021 23:32

created by a Korean tv director it seems..from Seoul

Sparklingbrook · 12/10/2021 23:32

Not my cup of tea (saw a clip on Gogglebox). What's the 'squid' bit?

The squid shape is the childhood game that the last game is based on.
Sparklingbrook · 12/10/2021 23:46

Oh right @Babyroobs, I did wonder. Put me in mind of Spongebob. The clip on Gogglebox also put me in mind of a gory Takeshi's Castle. Grin

I don't normally ever watch gory stuff like this, but it was compelling viewing !!
DoucheCanoe · 12/10/2021 23:48

@Sparklingbrook, each round is based on a Korean childhood game.

The "Squid game" is known to be pretty brutal because there's an offense and defence so it was the finale.

DoucheCanoe · 12/10/2021 23:49

That's how I described it to my DH @Sparklingbrook - Takeshi's castle with snipers 🤣

MyrealnameisBernard · 12/10/2021 23:53

I've only just heard of it as my child told me he'd seen clips but it looked weird. He's been told it's not for him. Or any children. I've not seen it but a letter came home from school about it. It sounds nasty! Has anyone seen it other than gogglebox?

Sparklingbrook · 12/10/2021 23:56

The more I hear about it the less I want to watch it TBH. My two (adult) DC have seen some and declared it to be 'shit'.

DoucheCanoe · 13/10/2021 00:08

DH and I enjoyed it.

I didn't see it on Gogglebox, it just jumped up on my Netflix so I watched it. First episode was a bit slow but once the background was set we were hooked!

Definitely not for children though.

PinkPlantCase · 13/10/2021 00:16

I saw a random episode when away with family recently. I hated it, really not very nice. I don’t really understand how people can enjoy it. Just senseless killing.

I am a bit of a wimp then it comes to tv and films though.

gardeninggirl68 · 13/10/2021 00:39

Didn't predict the ending!!

It shows human nature for what it is, quite enlightening

gardeninggirl68 · 13/10/2021 00:41

Most films on Netflix at this time of year are just 'senseless killing' and lots of us dress our kids up as senseless killers and get them to knock on strangers doors!

It's no different to all the slasher type movies

It was written and created in Korea for Korean audiences, but then took off elsewhere also.
Not sure I get your point... I enjoyed the programme, but thought of the actors as 'people' rather than 'Koreans'

I watched about 6 episodes because my 15 yr old wanted to watch it. It's not all that. I did a 'wtf is this tripe' at one point.

People seemed to like it though so meh.
