I only ever hear these words on MN.
Do the people who use words like these actually use them in rl?
Equally do people who use the f and c words a lot on MN use them as much in rl?
Just curious Grin

I say crikey Charlie (bc my mam said it and I picked it up). I swear like a sailor but I'm really working on it.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 12/10/2021 13:17

I never swore in front of my DC. Then one day I dropped boiling fat on my bare foot and screamed "Jesus fucking Christ!"

My sons were in the kitchen in seconds. They told me both the tone and the language alerted them to an emergency.

grapewine · 12/10/2021 13:19

I use the same language as I do on here, although I choose the audience. I'm not going to say FFS around my grandmother in her ninth decade, for instance.

Mantlemoose · 12/10/2021 13:19

I gosh and crikey in writing but not when speaking

WavesAndLeaves · 12/10/2021 13:22

I definitely say gosh, less of the crikey and more of the blimey, quite a lot of fucks, cunt is generally in my head

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 12/10/2021 13:22

I use gosh and crikey all the time in everyday conversation! Also fuck, but I don’t think I’ve ever said cunt out loud.

PorkTheDork · 12/10/2021 13:23

I say gosh or goodness. I don't say crikey. My mum does!

My husband probably gets called cunt more than his actual name.

My five year old said "what the silly heck?!" yesterday which was hilarious. No idea where he's got that from!

highstreetdiestreet · 12/10/2021 13:24

@GothicaAutistica

I don't mind the big bad four letter words, but they need to be used when the situation calls for it, not just dropped into common conversation for the fun of it.

I do say "Oh my gosh." I don't know why anyone needs to bring Gd into it. If you don't believe in Them, don't invoke Them. If you do, it's better not to take Their name in vain.

I used to say "Crikey, Moses!!" quite a lot in frustration. Less so now, though.

Why are you saying 'Them'? It's 'He' isn't it?
LiteralViolins · 12/10/2021 13:30

Gosh, crikey, blimey, good grief, good heavens - all get used regularly around here.

As do fuck, shit, jesus fucking christ and oh fucking hellfire you stupid fucking twat (usually directed at oneself, to be fair...)

LowbrowVictoriana · 12/10/2021 13:31

Why are you saying 'Them'? It's 'He' isn't it?

Imagine God's online profile: God - he, him 🤣

HeyFloof · 12/10/2021 13:31

@OldTinHat

I always use gosh and crikey interspersed with the odd blimey.
Same! Also, flipping heck.

My 4yo did shout "OH BLOODY HELL THERE'S A MASSIVE FLY UNDER MY BED!" the other day though so I might have to scale back on that one Grin

(We did later have a discussion about how it's probably best not to say bloody hell at school, or in front of Nana, but that Grandad would find it funny. And how it's OK to use surprised words, but you have to choose the right ones for who you're with because you might get done if you choose the wrong ones!)

Staysexyanddontgetmurdered · 12/10/2021 13:32

I say gosh and oh my goodness!!! When around my children, only to stop myself swearing like a sailor. My Dad used to say 'Stone the Crows!!' Probably for the exact same reason.

MakingM2 · 12/10/2021 13:32

I use gosh and crikey quite a lot instead of shit and crap - online and off.

Bugger is creeping back in now the DC are a bit older.

I only drop the f word if I'm genuinely absolutely incandescent about something and it still feels a bit wrong tbh. It does have impact though which is what swearing used to be for.

I never use the c word. It makes me physically sick when I hear other people using it too. No idea why. Our neighbour sometimes uses it towards her husband so loudly her DC must be able to hear it because our entire family can hear it. It makes me use the f word because if my children don't hear it from me she has no right to force it upon them. It's a really scummy word.

Derbee · 12/10/2021 13:36

I use gosh regularly. Never said crikey in my life

PreparationPreparationPrep · 12/10/2021 13:43

"Gosh is horrendous. It's just so Famous Five pollyanna-ish and when I read it on here it makes me cringe."

I say Gosh - and I am as far from that description as you can get.

GreenWhiteViolet · 12/10/2021 13:43

I say 'oh my goodness!' because I had a habit of saying 'oh my God!' which I had to break when I started working a nursery. So that was the substitute. It stuck.

I'm swearier in writing than I am in person, generally. I think because my dad was really OTT about not using 'bad language' when I was a teenager (even though he swore at me quite regularly) I can't actually say fuck without it sounding a bit deliberate and affected. Not a natural part of my vocabulary.

FairlyOddmother · 12/10/2021 13:51

My DM says 'glory!' or for especially vexing situations, 'glory be!'. She isn't particularly religious Hmm

MintyGreenDream · 12/10/2021 14:01

I don't use them because I'm not in a Enid Blyton book

GothicaAutistica · 12/10/2021 14:11

To answer the question of @whatsthepoint: I'm Jewish, it's just what we tend to use - though not always. Sort of similar to Orthodox Christians using the letter X in place of the word "Christ."

And for @highstreetdiestreet: Many don't believe in God (see, I can type it! Wink ) as an anthropomorphic, humanoid figure. More as "energy" or an "idea." So in my (and others') interpretation, the humanoid pronouns don't fit. Some modern holy books in liberal/reform Judaism have been altered to reflect this. You need to bear in mind that the original holy texts would have been in ancient Hebrew, which always must be masculine or feminine, which is why God is referred to as He. It doesn't necessarily mean that God is a man, it's just following ancient Hebrew conventions. Calling God "They" has nothing to do with the modern day Gender Identity theory. It's just indicating that God is not a male humanoid.

Anyway, I've derailed the thread quite enough!! Smile

DuvetDayIsEveryDay · 12/10/2021 14:35

I use all the blasphemy.

Fucking hell
Jesus fucking christ
God sake

amoung other pretty strong words - usually while driving.

Never swear at work.

LadyofMisrule · 12/10/2021 14:43

I use pretty much all of the above. :-)

notacooldad · 12/10/2021 14:48

Gosh is horrendous. It's just so Famous Five pollyanna-ish and when I read it on here it makes me cringe.
It doesn't sound so Pollyanna-ish with a strong Bolton accent!
Less so when it is from a.6ft 3 220 lb ice hockey player! 😂

butterflyze · 12/10/2021 14:53

I work for a firm run by God-Botherers and there's no swearing permitted in the building. They would be really offended, especially by anything potentially blasphemous.

So I've trained myself to use gosh, crikey, goodness me, oh my word, and other such innofensive expletives now Grin

NearlyNearlyThere · 12/10/2021 15:00

I say ‘gosh’ and ‘crikey’ occasionally, but not on MumsNet as far as I can remember.

MassiveHoard · 12/10/2021 15:03

Crickey, gosh and Goodness me in this house. Plus the occasional expletive. We're quite accustomed to 'shit on it' a la Martin from FND. DS is known to say any random. word or phrase in the tone you would use for swearing. For example: Oh chicken nuggets! It's quite satisfying.
