I only ever hear these words on MN.
Do the people who use words like these actually use them in rl?
Equally do people who use the f and c words a lot on MN use them as much in rl?
Just curious Grin

I have been known to use blimey as well as all the sweary stuff.Never use jolly, as in " jolly good fun" etc, but have people in work who do.

Cissyandflora · 12/10/2021 12:45

I do say golly gosh. But never crikey.
I mostly say fuck and very occasionally, and for particular emphasis, cunt.
I never say crumbs. Or flipping heck tucker.

AllyBama · 12/10/2021 12:45

Depending on my company I say fuck, shit, cunt, blimey, crikey and gosh. Not all at once of course. I am Australian thoughGrin

IntermittentParps · 12/10/2021 12:47

I do say gosh. Not crikey, I don't think. I say cripes though. And horrid. and good lord/good heavens/heavens to Betsy.

I'm not actually from the 1930s.

Cissyandflora · 12/10/2021 12:47

@IhateBoswell

I don't say gosh but I do like a crikey, usually said sarcastically.
I’m going to bring this into my repertoire.

I also say good golly miss molly.

I’m mostly a fucksake type of person though. I’d like to stop that.

whatsthpoint · 12/10/2021 12:49

@GothicaAutistica

I don't mind the big bad four letter words, but they need to be used when the situation calls for it, not just dropped into common conversation for the fun of it.

I do say "Oh my gosh." I don't know why anyone needs to bring Gd into it. If you don't believe in Them, don't invoke Them. If you do, it's better not to take Their name in vain.

I used to say "Crikey, Moses!!" quite a lot in frustration. Less so now, though.

You can't even type God?
JassyRadlett · 12/10/2021 12:50

@LazyMareofEastown

I say crikey but only ever in an overexaggerated and godawful Australian accent a la Steve Irwin.

Gosh is horrendous. It's just so Famous Five pollyanna-ish and when I read it on here it makes me cringe.

As an Australian in the U.K., I’d put the faux-Australian accent in the ‘horrendous’ category. Why on earth people think it’s acceptable to mock Australians is beyond me.

Gosh, on the other hand, is pretty neutral and inoffensive.

CuteGirlsWatchMeEatEther · 12/10/2021 12:50

A crikey will escape me daily irl sometimes a gosh. I never use the word cunt irl though

namechanging564 · 12/10/2021 12:51

Yes I do, my Granny always said them, she was pretty awesome so it's fine by me. I do swear like a trooper too if that helps 🤷‍♀️

INeedNewShoes · 12/10/2021 12:55

If it was socially more acceptable I would swear more than I do. It just seems to be my natural state...

I generally try not to swear (with varying levels of success) as I know many people don't like it but with my friends who are at a similar level of sweariness it is a relief not trying to censor my language and yes I do say fuck and cunt when I think it won't offend the company I'm in.

MajorCarolDanvers · 12/10/2021 12:56

I say them all the time. Helps me avoid swearing in inappropriate company eg in front of children, at work etc.

Whilst I'm quite happy to swear verbally in conversation I don't really like swearing in written comms so will also use them when posting.

TuftyMarmoset · 12/10/2021 12:56

I work with someone who says golly and my aunt says oh crumbs Grin
I don’t really say anything - I rarely swear but I don’t really use swear substitutes either. I guess I don’t exclaim very much!

ClinkeyMonkey · 12/10/2021 12:59

I say both of these all the time. I think I've used crikey on here a few times. I also use plenty of 'proper' swear words!!

irregularegular · 12/10/2021 13:01

I do say "gosh" I think. Though I admit it sounds a bit odd. But sometimes you need a polite exclamation. Also "goodness". I don't think I say "crikey".

2bazookas · 12/10/2021 13:01

Ay don't say crikey or cunt

AngelsWithSilverWings · 12/10/2021 13:05

I say gosh or blimey quite a bit. I do use stronger language occasionally though ( especially when driving or if talking about the current government)

Teamtrial · 12/10/2021 13:06

I say crikey, blimey, blimey Charlie, Good Lord...

The odd f-word will escape my lips at home too.

It worries me that there are lots of people who seem to have swear words as their only adjectives or exclamations.

ILookAtTheFloor · 12/10/2021 13:07

My go to word when I'm trying not to swear (in front of my children and at work is BUMS.

Oh BUMS!

I say it all the time, when I actually want to say bollocks or occasionally shit. I've said it once today so far Grin

Saltpepperbutter · 12/10/2021 13:08

Yes. I say gosh and blimey. My husband says crikey quite often.

I also use a lot more colourful language, depending on my audience,

roarfeckingroarr · 12/10/2021 13:09

I say gosh often. Crikey less so.

starrynight21 · 12/10/2021 13:10

Yep, I've always used gosh, golly, crikey. I do swear at times, but never the F or C words, they just don't come easily to me. I don't care if others say them, it's fine but they are not for me.

musketeersmama · 12/10/2021 13:10

Use ‘em all and more besides. Isn’t language glorious!

HirplesWithHaggis · 12/10/2021 13:12

It's jings, crivvens and help ma boab in my house. (And a real challenge to get that through spellcheck...)

Most of these "softer" exclamations are variants of blasphemy, even blimey (God blind me).

deeni · 12/10/2021 13:12

I started using these ironically.

They are no longer ironic.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 12/10/2021 13:12

DH uses blimey a lot (he prefers fuck and cunt but since we’ve had DGC he’s toned it down Grin). I say crikey and so do quite a few people I know. I also say fuck and cunt, mainly for effect because at first glance I’m not the sort of person you’d expect to do that and sometimes you need to put your marker down…
Gosh and goodness are bit too twee for my taste.
