Moving to Yorkshire

Currently living in SE England and lucky enough to own my own home. However, the cost of living is high and I’m looking to move north for a (slightly) cheaper standard of living. I have family in Edinburgh too so will mean I can be closer to them.

Looking for recommendations of villages/small towns in Yorkshire. Love the idea of an Emmerdale-style place…I’ve been to Skipton and although it’s a bigger town I loved it.

Ideally if possible would like -

*2-3 bed older style cottage or house
*Small town/village feel
*Local primary for our son that would be close travelling distance…nothing TOO remote
*Ideally within 30 mins travelling distance to a big town
*Couple of local pubs/coffee shops etc

I am realistic enough to understand even nicer places in the north don’t come cheap but it’s got to be cheaper than being bled dry in a house here that you can’t swing a cat in.

My current property has an estimated value of 350k. I’d ideally like to budget for 250k max if possible and try put some money away. If anyone can recommend any areas that would fit the bill or has experience of living in Yorkshire I’d be rally grateful.

Thank you in advance!

Hebden Bridge or Mytholmroyd might fit the bill (as long as you avoid flood-prone areas).

Not quite emmerdale, but there are lots of lovely towns and villages within 30 minutes of York, which is only 2.5 hours from Edinburgh on the train. Towns like Easingwold, Malton, Thirsk and surrounding villages are lovely. Further out, somewhere like Ripon, Helmsley or Bedale?

Property prices do tend to be higher, but it is a lovely part of the world to live in and having York on your doorstep gives the best of both worlds.

Not Yorkshire but still in the Dales, what about Sedbergh? Closer to Edinburgh than York (train from oxenholme is less than 2 hours) and much more "Emmerdale".

If you've family in Edinburgh then I'd focus on areas close to the A1/A19 and main east coast railway line if you want an easy journey to them (Thirsk, Ripon, Wetherby etc) BUT I think you might struggle to get a period property for £250k.

Oh welcome to Yorkshire its fabulous up here!!! However I have to say it really isn't as cheap here as you might think I wish it was and I have lived in Yorkshire all my 50 years ! You might need to use your full budget or lower your expectations Op. I wish you well in your search and hope your move goes well,

I suggest look North of Leeds Horsforth,Rawdon,Guisley, Yeadon villages,,Otley ,,, Rothwell,Methley,,both within easy commute of leeds for entertainment etc,Wakefield is a big city that is cheaper so might be worth looking there,

I have just negotiated a WFH contract and I’m looking to move to Yorkshire in the next year or two to be nearer my family so watching with interest! Eldest son lives in Northallerton which is a lovely market town but I don’t want to be so close to him as he’s a newly wed and I don’t want them to feel they have to have me round all the time. I’ve seen some nice properties in Leyburn. I’m not in a hurry though, prepared to wait for the right house.

I live in a village between Wakefield and Huddersfield.
Absolutely love it. Quiet and rural but easy drive to all the cities.
I'm from South East originally. Lived up North 30 years and would never go back!

Pateley Bridge, has both primary and secondary schools along with a strong community feel and amenities but only half an hour from Harrogate or Ripon.

I think your budget might rule out some of the traditionally nicer areas but would be doable in places such as Otley where you don’t have a train station. Very close to the Emmerdale set and scenes are frequently filmed there. Have a look at the properties on Rightmove to get a feel for prices.

But for better value for money I would also look into the Bradford postcodes such as Saltaire and Bingley

Thekolschisonme · 12/10/2021 13:16

Agree that 250k isn't a lot for those areas. Might have to up your budget. The thing is that so many other people are looking for this kind of thing now what with wfh etc. I want to move back to York (born and bred nearby) and have a similar budget. We were really struggling to find anything as nice as our own home across the pennines.

The nice bits of East Yorkshire were still excellent value when we moved from there a few years ago- have a look on that side of York (eg Pocklington) and around Beverley.
