What is Chequers for?

The Prime Minister has gone on a Break to Marbella. I thought Chequers was meant for the PM to have a short 'free'(?) break.

Chequers is the PM’s weekend home.

It's meant to be so that the Prime Minister has somewhere nice to entertain visiting foreign dignitaries - other heads of state, etc. It is used that way but it's also pretty much now where the PM prefers to live. Let's face it. A small flat in the centre of a crowded city, or a lavish countryside pile. He's only in London when he absolutely has to be.
