What is this chap climbing up my blind cord please? He’s quite large and slow moving.

Any insect experts out there?

Some sort of beetle

TopCatsTopHat · 09/10/2021 22:54

I think he is a lost autumn insect who accidentally got into your house looking for somewhere to hibernate. He doesn't look like any pest insects I know.

WowOoo · 09/10/2021 22:56

Shield bug.

VenusClapTrap · 09/10/2021 22:57

I left the window open a crack and I’ve come upstairs to find four ladybirds, two flies, one spider, one huge mosquito and this beetle thing have all come in and are hanging out round my window.

He’s definitely shield big family, but I’ve never seen one like this before.

Bug not big. Although he is a big bug.

It looks like a big stink bug. Not venomous but not an ideal houseguest to have living in your wardrobe over the winter months either.

WorraLiberty · 09/10/2021 23:03

Could it be this Shield Bug?

VenusClapTrap · 09/10/2021 23:04

Ok I’ve googled shield bugs and stink bugs and it’s neither. Body too long.

Yes! @WorraLiberty! That’s it!

I'm loving his Circus skills on your blind cord! 🤣😍

VenusClapTrap · 09/10/2021 23:13

He’s quite funny to watch. A bit John Cleese with his long back legs.

I’m going to try to pop him back out of the window.

Dear OP,

No expert at all but think it might be a western conifer seed bug.

VenusClapTrap · 09/10/2021 23:20

Yes, that’s what Worra’s video led me to. It’s a non native species. I’ve submitted a report and photo to some university non native species tracker thing that popped up.

Interestingly they're becoming more and more common in the UK. We have to record any bugs we find at work and we've found a few of these over the past couple of years.

None with such fine circus skills though 😁

VenusClapTrap · 09/10/2021 23:30

Well, he’s taken his ministry of funny walks circus skills right up into Charlotte’s corner, and I’m not going near there to extract him and put him out, not when Dh is away and I might have to face her alone. So he may not survive the night. But if he’s still there in the morning, I’ll return him to the garden.
