Does this scenario sound ok to you?

Hi I'm just wondering if this scenario sounds ok to you. My dd has just been given a date for her first holy communion. Because of the time of year with Christmas coming it's going to be an expensive time. Initially we said we'd go for a family meal including our parents, siblings, their partners and children but looking at this as an option this is is working out really expensive as a lot of restaurants have increased their prices and their set menus are still quiet expensive. We've now said we would just go for lunch ourselves after the church and then have family/friends over that afternoon for cake and a cup of tea. No one aside from immediate family of the communion children are allowed into the church as they are still limiting numbers where we live.
The thing is my family are a bit miffed at not been invited to the meal as in the past we would have always have had a family meal with everyone there but it's mainly just because it's the time of year been so close to Christmas.

Is it tradition you pay? I know in my family it is and I always think so expensive!

How many would it be? Could you get a function room and food? Or get the food done for the house ? Might be cheaper than a big meal out

Could you not have the family to your house for a meal or a buffet?

Yeah it would be tradition although my in laws would offer to pay and also to add a bottle of red/white wine to the table. There would be 15 of us so too small for a function unfortunately. We did a large function of nearly 100 people for dds baptism years ago been the first grandchild and the cost of that was close to what we would be paying now for 15.

I agree you should invite family back to yours for a buffet lunch. Dropping round for tea and cake is a bit shit tbh, it looks grabby as hell.

Can you shift the date of the Holy Communion?

cinnamonspice32 · 09/10/2021 20:20

@Newchances it's the space to be honest plus I'm working as is dh right up to the day so I really don't want to be spending all hours cleaning the night before either, I know I will still have to clean a bit but I'd feel I'd have to deep clean if people were coming for a meal at ours as opposed to a cuppa 🤣. We also don't have enough tables and chairs for a sit down meal but I know we could borrow stuff.

@TamponSupport no it's a fixed date with the schools.

Space will always be a problem but with buffet type meals people can stand about etc bring it into the living room?
