What age could you leave your DC unsupervised at home (while in the house yourself)?

What age could you let your DC be unsupervised in a different room of the house, say with you checking in on them every half hour or so?

DS is 4 (June birthday) and will take himself off to play in his room.

Thanks. We’ve taken everything out of DDs room at the moment as she was messing around & refusing to sleep so all toys are downstairs anyway right now

Since they could move they would move around our (admittedly very small) home by themselves. As long as no dangerous/ chokable objects are left within reach its fine. And there would be no tv or radio on so I could hear them at all times.

DD is 3 and can leave her in one room while I potter around doing things but she wouldn’t last half an hour without coming to follow me around, asking me to play, etc.

Steelesauce · 10/10/2021 08:58

Pretty young? I mean as long as the room is safe and they are happy/entertained any age I'd say.

Is this all day? As in popping in and out every half an hour for 8 hours? 2 hours?

My kids have played in their own room since very young. Say 3 or 4. But I wouldn't do it for prolonged periods of the day OR make plans based around it. Because often they get bored or want to spend time with you or have you entertain them

I wouldn’t leave mine for half an hour completely alone without checking until they’re six or so. And I’m a very slack parent by normal mumsnet standards. At three I wouldn’t leave them more than about ten mins without just popping my head around the door.

3ish

Depends on the child. My 3 year old is a nightmare for making a mess and drawing on walls so needs more supervision.
But my 6year old would play in the playroom by herself at 3.

Fallagain · 10/10/2021 09:40

Depends on the child. My 2 year old I will leave for 5 to 10 mins while I pop to the loo and make a cup of tea, start putting food shopping away but I would always be on the same floor as her. My 5 year I would happily leave for 30 mins but unless she is watching TV or playing with her sister then she will come and find me.
