Hello on 500mg 3 x a day Amoxicillin for chest infection - cough is getting better I think. I’m on day 3 and got really really painful stomach cramps. Period due Sunday and a kids party too! I slept most of today and feel awful. Can I stop the anti b I mean cough is a little better not sure now it’s a chest infection - phone convo with GP.

She did suggest an inhaler maybe - I’m shattered! I feel worse on anti b overall but cough is better

Have you taken it before? I’m allergic to it and it made me feel awful when I had it.

Kummerspeck · 08/10/2021 19:40

Antibiotics change the balance of gut flora which can cause stomach cramps and/or diarrhoea.
Sensible to continue taking if you can though

I've just completed 7 days of Amoxycillin for a chest infection. By the end I had fairly loose bowels and a generally yucky feeling but I'm a believer in completing the course to.prevent antibiotic resistance. At your stage, the weaker bugs will have been seen off by the Amoxycillin but the ones that don't frighten easily would be left to live, breed and fight another day. It might help to take prebiotic or yakult or actimel for your stomach. You shouldn't stop unless you're very unwell rather than inconvenienced by them.

Thanks everyone I’ve been in bed all day with it - I felt ill with the chest infection weak but the antibiotics have left me feverish and weaker. And exhausted. I’ll ask DH to get me some Actimel or Yakut tonight thank you

The antibiotics will not give you a fever, if you have a fever is because you are still fighting the infection and in such cases stoping the antibiotics it is exactly what you shouldn’t do.

If the cramps are unbearable, ring the NHS telephone service, that way they can check whether there is something else causing the issue or prescribe a different antibiotic.

Wtf86 · 08/10/2021 19:56

I’m shivery I think that’s a fever? I will take my temp. Cramps are bearable tummy very sore to touch though. I have a high pain threshold (not boasting) so sometimes I worry what I put up with. (Dry socket and gallbladder pain I tolerated til it got really bad)

I was on a course of amoxicillin recently, they are harsh! Felt nauseous a lot, be careful to never take them on an empty stomach. They also caused a rash on my legs - I wasn't sad when the GP said to stop taking them Wink

Wtf86 · 08/10/2021 20:02

Oh really! Well today I couldn’t stomach food so I did end up taking them on empty stomach - need to take my night one but took my second at 4pm literally worked this morning from home felt so rough took myself to bed from 1-3 then DH said he’ll get kids cos I was so weak

I had these a few weeks ago and ended up on secondary anti biotics for the fact they gave me the shits, they are extremely harsh. I’d recommend buying some probiotics,

Thanks @Bluntness100 for being so erm blunt!

Hi guys just coming back to update. I’m finding my chest is generally Okish during the day - still coughing lots more during the day but worse in the evening - bad headache and sore stomach muscles now too. Kids party tomorrow and due on. I did get an early night tonight but got disturbed so up now. Will try best to get back to sleep. Head is banging

I'm on the same antibiotic at the moment (for an ear infection) Sad

You really need to eat with them, it'll help your stomach, even just a banana with each one or a biscuit. They're very strong on your stomach if it's empty.

Hope you feel better soon!
