What do you eat when you’re not cooking for anyone else?

DH and DS are away for half-term and whilst I’ll miss them, I’m looking forward to not cooking on the evenings and will probably have toast or cereal or crisp sandwiches most evenings.

Not only that, I will have them by 6 and have the whole evening to myself.

What would you have in the same situation?

Special K or frozen pizza. Crisps for pudding. Wine.

RumHoney · 08/10/2021 20:19

Steak, but mainly because my OH is veggie so when he's away I get my meat fix.

Graphista · 08/10/2021 20:20

I live alone now so can have what like whenever...which I rather took advantage of and now I'm having to be more sensible and lose the weight!

When dd lived at home she has allergies so certain things I couldn't even have in the house! Now while I miss dd I do rather enjoy now being able to have strawberries, sesame oil and nuts in the house!

When she used to go to her dads for contact I used to fill my boots on the things I couldn't have when she was here and then make sure any surface affected was thoroughly cleaned.

I'd also have the things that she didn't like and so I rarely had them when she was here :

Garlic mushrooms
Risotto
Roast potatoes
Biryani (when I could still eat spicy food!)
Okra
Aubergines
Cherry pie

Used to be such a treat.

But I'd also have lazy moments and have a pot noodle or takeaway

Treat items where I wouldn't get a look in if dd were home as she loved them too:

Pringles
Doritos
Nice dips
Haagen Dazs or Ben and Jerry's ice cream
Lemon drizzle cake
Posh cheeses - unfortunately for me she's inherited my cheese addiction!

You get the idea Grin

I’ve been on my own since the DDs grew up, over ten years ago. (DH died 30 years ago).
I cook all my dinners from scratch - tonight I roasted a pork joint with crackling and roast potatoes, gravy and greens. I make my own soups for lunches, and have a proper cooked dinner every night. My one concession is to use ready made filo and puff pastry when I make pies, as it’s a bit of a faff otherwise. I roll my own sushi too!
Since I retired, I can be more relaxed about timing - I used to crack on with cooking the kids dinner as soon as I got home from work. And I used to do more stir fries and grills for speed in those days. Now I enjoy slow cooking, roasting and stewing.

itsutterlyshit · 08/10/2021 20:23

Pasta, melted butter, tuna and cheese. Sounds vile but tastes delicious.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 08/10/2021 20:24

Beans on toast

Yoghurt and granola

Crisps and toast

Fdksyihfd · 08/10/2021 20:25

I like to eat oven pizza, make a big ratatouille to have over a couple of nights, fresh pasta with one of the sauces from the chilled sections. Basically all things that DH isn’t that keen on, I could have them when he’s here and he’d sort himself out but for whatever reason I often don’t

MintJulia · 08/10/2021 20:27

Home made veggie soup
Trout fillet with saute potatoes & salad
Jacket potatoes with grated cheese, tomatoes, cucumber, black olives
mushroom risotto with parmesan

I was always rubbish at cooking meat. If DS wasn't such a carnivore, I think I'd only eat meat when I go out and someone else is cooking.

darklindor · 08/10/2021 20:29

Frozen mash, peas and fish fingers covered in tomato ketchup.

Large glass of wine.

MotherofPearl · 08/10/2021 20:31

Also pan fried lamb's liver. Nobody in my family likes liver, but I love it.

ssd · 08/10/2021 20:32

I like a baked potato with cheese and pickle. I could eat the same meal every night, doesn't bother me. Saves me thinking about it.

actiongirl1978 · 08/10/2021 20:36

I bloody hate cooking for people.

I would eat toast or cereal or just cheese and crackers. With lots of tea. And then bed by 8pm

optimistic40 · 08/10/2021 20:37

I'm going to sound weird, but I eat most healthily on my own. Not always, of course! But I enjoy making huge piles of vegetables, beans, etc with coriander and chilli. I wouldn't offer that to others!

thinkbiglittleone · 08/10/2021 20:38

Cheese platters
Biscuits
Chocolate
Cereal
Scrambled egg on toast

I'm a real picker though.

mrsm43s · 08/10/2021 20:42

I'm pretty sure there's one poster on here who will recommend Co-op ready meals with a side of a lot of wine :)

Personally I'd probably do an Indian takeaway order which would do me a couple of days, a couple of days of something on toast (beans, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese etc), a couple of "use up what's in the freezer" days, and at least one meal out with girlfriends.

DrWankincense · 08/10/2021 20:45

Nice bread, salami, salad, olives, cheese. Deli stuff basically. And wine.
Breakfast for dinner - bacon and eggs, tattie scones and mushrooms.
Chinese takeaway.
Tomato sandwich on white bread and a big glass of cold milk.
Chips and cheese.

Mantlemoose · 08/10/2021 20:50

Orange cheesy pasta out the box with buttered toast, then ice cream, then chocolate

ssd · 08/10/2021 20:52

Or cheese on toast

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/10/2021 20:53

Some sort of fish, usually, or soup. Something easy.

Whattheduck · 08/10/2021 20:55

Cheese and potato pie with tinned tomatoes
Jacket potato with cheese, coleslaw, corned beef and pickle
Crackers or crusty bread with a selection of cheeses and pate
Chilli,rice and garlic bread
Tomato soup with a cheese and onion sandwich on fresh white bread
Poached or boiled eggs with toast
Sandwiches and nice crisps
Cheese and onion pasty with baked beans

BurntO · 08/10/2021 20:56

Cheesy pasta here too! Love it. I’d maybe make something spicy too as OH isn’t a fan. Definitely a take away one night too. Enjoy!

RaoulDufysCat · 08/10/2021 20:59

Omelettes
Cereal
Eggs of various types on toast
Mushrooms in creamy sauce on toast
Fried tomatoes on toast
Sandwiches, sometimes toasted (you don't need a dedicated sandwich toaster can do them in a pan which was a revelation to me)
Picky things - olives, cheese, crackers, cold meat, radishes, capers, nuts
Pasta tossed with butter, lemon juice, black pepper
Couscous with roasted veg/cold meat
Baked aubergines with rice/cold meat (the aubergines do take a while but the actual prep is minimal)
Gazpacho in a carton from the supermarket. Honestly could drink pints of this and love it with some good bread.

Graphista · 08/10/2021 21:11

@Babdoc I envy you I'd love to do my own sushi, the rolling would be fine my problem is I can't cook the rice to save my life!

This threads just reminded me when my dad had the place to himself he used to make himself a curry that was hotter than the fires of hell! 🔥 🔥🔥

He was the only one that COULD eat it! My brother once wasn't paying attention and heated up leftovers of one of them and didn't twig till he took a big mouthful, had to drink a pint of milk in one go! Grin

Breakfast for dinner

Ohhhh yes! Love this!

Fried eggs, tattie scones, square sausage and black pud (there's a lovely veggie version of these available now), veggie bacon, fried mushrooms, fried tomatoes, buttered white toast and a big mug of builders tea...er how many cals? Blush

Tomato sandwich on white bread

Very few people have had/heard of this we had it a lot growing up, also grilled tomatoes on toast with a little salt and black pepper - gorgeous!

ooft · 08/10/2021 21:12

Wine.

AdamandMadam · 08/10/2021 21:25

@PurpleDaisies

What are your favourite things to eat?
Cheese mainly!
