Which name for school place?

DS has a normal everyday name but is known by a shortened form of that - think Frederick and Freddie (not actual name). He hates it when he gets called his full name, at hospital appointments and the like, so I'm thinking of applying for his secondary school place in just his shortened name.

I had similar and hated it when we had a new teacher who just used my awful full name straight off the register, so do know how he feels if only I'd thought of that 11 years ago Hmm

Am wondering if this will cause issues registering him though. Does anyone have any experience? Will it do something weird to the system if all his other details match up?

He'll probably want his first name on certificates etc as he grows up, and whatever name you register him as now will follow him into secondary and beyond.
I'd register him with his legal name but make it clear to the school he should be known by the shortened version every day.

Apply in his formal name. Schools usually have an information form that will include a 'Known As' space.

Even if you applied in his full name, when the school ask for information from you, there will probably be a ‘known by’ section. My dc has the same sort of thing with a name and I used his full name to apply, but when he started secondary, his name badge and everything else was in the shortened version.

We applied for secondary school last year and the form (when he started in September) had a “known by” box also. Apply with his full name.

Thanks everyone, have gone for his full name.

Lots of people use nicknames, it won’t be an issue. School registration is an official process, you need to use the full name for that - it will be needed for exam certificates and things like that.
