Baby drank shampoo water

Waiting for 111 to call me back.

I'm exhausted today. I was washing DD18months hair. She wears a visor to keep shampoo from getting in her eyes which works brilliantly but makes it impossible to see her face.

Anyway she was super chilled and quiet let me wash, rinse, condition, detangle and rinse without complaint and it was the loveliest time we had all day.

Once I had removed the visor to soap her off I realised she was using her little boat to drink water! It has holes in it but could still hold water. I didn't even think much of it I just took it away and cracked on.

Put her to bed and she's been coughing. We had covid in august and she doesn't have any other symptoms. It's a funny saliva filled cough she kept waking and her nappy was super full at midnight. I then thought back to the bath and realised I didn't have a clue how much she had, then I thought of how easy it had been to wash her hair and how long I spent doing it. I'm trying to hold it together while we wait for the clinical team to call back. It's an adult shampoo not a kiddie one.
She seems fine she's wide awake after all the coughing but she's still coughing and I have no idea what could happen. Anyone have similar happen. I want to post on AIBU for traffic but I'm too on edge to cope with being slagged off tonight.

Have you looked it up on the poison website?

NiceGerbil · 08/10/2021 02:49

Bathwater with some shampoo?

It'll be fine. It is not poisonous and if using baby shampoo definitely not as they know what little kids are like. And on top of that, massively enormously diluted.

I mean I wouldn't fancy drinking a bottle of shampoo I imagine I'd be sick. Maybe funny tum. But not more than that. And this was massively diluted baby shampoo I assume.

See what they say on the phone but genuinely don't worry :)

Did you use a children's shampoo? There shouldn't be anything too nasty in it if it's for use on little ones.
My DD has probably drunk pints of bath water over the years - pre and post shampoo, she's had no ill effects. It's ok to be worried but I'm sure they'll be fine.

I would be concerned that she's inhaled water, but I wouldn't be concerned about her drinking the shampoo water at all.

Make sure you discuss the possibility of dry drowning with the clinical team.

She said it was adult's shampoo in the OP

Hope 111 will be helpful.

I'm sure your DD will be fine. Cosmetics aren't allowed to be extremely toxic; it's foreseeable that someone might swallow some shampoo water after all.

onelittlefrog · 08/10/2021 04:07

She'll be OK. It's not toxic. But in future maybe try a children's shampoo especially if this is a habit!

1forAll74 · 08/10/2021 04:11

She will be fine I am sure, I would imagine lots of little ones have drunk some soapy water and stuff in the bath, when they have little toys and container things in the bath to play with. I would have given a child something else to drink after, to dilute whatever they have swallowed.

IndecentCakes · 08/10/2021 04:21

Honestly, nothing will happen. I used to eat the bubbles in the bath and drink them all the time, and I've made it past 40!

almaonao · 08/10/2021 09:34

Thanks everyone. She's fine this morning and has stopped coughing. Thanks @Aquamarine1029 I didn't see your post until after they called. They didn't directly mention it but they mentioned the symptoms and said they weren't worried about the shampoo. Will be keeping a very close eye for the next couple of days. Thanks all, I was terrified last night

I think the coughing was probably coincidental.

Mine must have drunk gallons of soap, shampoo and bubble bath filled water over the years. They were forever sucking flannels, gulping it down from bath toys pretending it was tea or a favourite game was filling up squeeze toys and trying to squirt it into each other's mouthsHmm

I'll admit I never even considered the shampoo etc would be a risk, I was more grossed out by them drinking water their bottoms had been soaking in.

I’m beginning to think if we are awful parents. Our 19 month old DD gulped some shampoo/soapy bath water from a boat two days ago whilst in bath and I don’t think we even discussed it between us. Perhaps I should have worried at least a bit?!

MrsBungle · 08/10/2021 10:19

My kids both did this. I never thought anything of it really. My ds was a right bugger for drinking bloody swimming pool water too.

TheGrumpyGoat · 08/10/2021 10:22

Mine used to do this all the time! The biggest issue it caused was that they drank so much liquid just before bed that their nappies always leaked in the night.

DownWhichOfLate · 08/10/2021 10:28

Mine is slightly older. Was told not to drink bubbles as it might cause them to fart them out. Encouraged him to drink more. Whoops.

No, you shouldn't have. There is nothing positive about health anxiety.

It was a standard occurrence here too and never got discussed except in a ‘urgh, hope he hasn’t wee’d in there’ kind of way.

My son’s favourite beverage is bath water soup.

BrownEyedSquirrel · 08/10/2021 11:42

My 12 month old grabbed his shampoo bottle and drank a big gulp once! Seemed very pleased with himself. He did vomit but was then fine. They do like to make us worry.

grey12 · 08/10/2021 11:44

Unfortunately kids love drinking bath water..... with soap/shampoo/wtv in it. I find it ridiculous that they actually sell tea sets for bathtime as if kids need any more incentive 🤦🏻‍♀️
