This isn't a big deal but it's been playing on my mind all day as its confused me. If someone can explain it to me please?

DH and I weren't married when DS was born, but are now and were not long after.

Because I took DHs name, when we registered DS, we just gave him DH surname. So that's his legal name, the name he has at Dr's, nursery etc. Obviously at birth he was baby "mymaidenname" as we were unmarried. He had an accident as toddlers do last night and we ended up in A&E, when I booked him in they couldn't find him under his name, so took our address, and found him, on the hospital records he is still "my maiden name"

My question is, why is his surname different there, and would his medical records link with different surnames?

Thanks.

It won’t be changed unless you tell them to change it.

The hospital records don't automatically connect to any other records (birth certificate or GP records) so they need to updated separately, which normally only happens when the child interacts with the hospital (e.g. Seen in A&E, referred as an out patient etc).

If he’s never been to hospital for appointments or A&E since he was born until now, then his records would only be under the name he had then (which, because you weren’t married, was your surname not his dad’s). When you registered him at GP he would have gone under whatever name you chose (probably his dad’s surname) on the forms but he would have been registered with the NHS number from his red book/birth paperwork which would link the records to those at the hospital. Now his actual surname has been updated at the hospital anything you get from them will be in his registered name.

Sounds normal. Details need to be updated manually by ED reception staff unless they’ve been admitted elsewhere in the hospital in the meantime
