Just that really. It feels so freeing to know I won't lose an hour this evening to mindless scrolling...

No it's was annoying that WhatsApp was down as I use it to share photos of my students latest progress.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/10/2021 07:13

no, since i message dd who is abroad, call her, via messenger, in fact her address in his messenger and very luckily i copied it onto my note book

RedRiverShore · 05/10/2021 07:54

People who use it for work must never be able to escape from the damn thing

RampantIvy · 05/10/2021 07:57

They could mute it outside of working hours @RedRiverShore.
We don't use WhatsApp for work. Don't most companies use Teams these days?

RedRiverShore · 05/10/2021 08:09

Does that not mute the whole lot though or can you separate sections of it to mute so you can have family stuff but not work, I haven't used it for years and then it was a more social thing. I thought that most used Teams but lots on these WhatsApp threads have said about work stuff

I know it's ridiculous. We have a team general chat but it can happily be muted/deleted and you won't miss any important announcements. If something is actually urgent (and generally what's seen as urgent on WhatsApp work chats generally aren't) it is communicated by text or phone call rather than a constant bombardment of WhatsApp messages and 'did you see x message at 10pm last night'. Eurgh.

Yes you can mute individual chats.

Our work Whatsapp is a mare!

Endless messages of an evening/weekend, countless pics of people's dogs, then important urgent messages sandwiched in between.

I do silence it, but as key messages are sent, I still have to scroll through!

RedRiverShore · 05/10/2021 08:16

Thanks Upsielazy and RampantIvy. I will get DH to sort his out, not work but probably lots of unnecessary coming though all the while disturbing the peace.

SarahBellam · 05/10/2021 08:17

You do know you're not required to use any of them, and if you choose to do so, you can curate what you see?

If he goes into the chat there's 3 dots in the top right corner and there's a mute chat option. This means you don't get notifications and it just updates when you open WhatsApp, you can then unmute it if needed.
RedRiverShore · 05/10/2021 08:34

Thanks, I will tell him to do that, he leaves his phone downstairs and watches sport upstairs so does not need these notifications instantly, they are just there to annoy me, he can check them before bedtime

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 05/10/2021 08:36

Of course but it's easy to fall into the habit.

It was bliss last night. I've been signed off work sick yesterday and I was feeling vulnerable and insecure and worried about that and spending too much time posting on Facebook as a result. To not have access to it meant I could calm down and not feel that needy pull to go on there for 'reassurance'.

Once it came back up, the first post I saw was a fb friend ranting about TERFs. I wish it was down permanently.

In my main job we have all agreed that only important information is to be communicated via the work group chat. So no pictures of dogs or anyone's dinner. You can send that in a private message and be blocked by the receiver immediately

WhatsApp is incredibly helpful in my line of work, because most jobs happen abroad, or with people from a variety of countries that are constantly travelling all over the place, so don't have a local phone number. Most messages are actually worded just like emails, but people reply much quicker to them than if you sent them an email. Why, I do not know yet.

KurtWilde · 05/10/2021 08:41

If you're thrilled they're down why do you use them in the first place? There's a way to make them permanent down - delete them.

And no, I wasn't thrilled. Like countless others I use WhatsApp and messenger to stay in touch with family (some are overseas) and also clients for work (WhatsApp).

Many people who are isolated due to Heath, age, MH issues etc rely on these platforms for their day to day interaction with the rest of the world and without it are all but completely cut off.

To be 'thrilled' these platforms stopped working is great for you, but not for those millions of users who rely on them.

Cactus1982 · 05/10/2021 09:11

Who even uses the word ‘thrilled’?🤔
