In a rut. Considering a life coach. But will it be a waste of money?

My DS has started school and I need to go back to work. When I had him, I quit my job and became a full time SAHM, then Covid happened and the nursery he went to a few mornings a week closed, so I didn’t even consider getting a job. All in all, I haven’t really worked in almost five years. Every time I look at any job ads I am filled with fear and doubt and dread. I have no confidence at my ability to do my old job!

But equally, I am bored, sad, and a bit depressed at home. Also DH and I could do with the extra income.

Someone suggested that I get a life coach.

Has anyone done it? Was it worthwhile?

I looked some up on social media and felt a little cynical. But I can’t carry on like this!

I’m also completely directionless so maybe I’m not the best candidate for a coach?

I would love to hear other people’s experiences if they got a life coach and what they got out of it! And I would love to know how they found someone they clicked with.

See my username, its a scam. A business coach or career coach with actual qualifications would be better.

justabigdisco · 04/10/2021 18:09

I would say be very wary about who you choose, if you do go for it. Seems anyone can set themselves up as a life coach these days

For a start, don't look for someone on social media.

StarryStarrySocks · 04/10/2021 18:12

In my experience, yes it is a waste of money. Although I have never worked one to one with a life coach I have done a few one off workshops and some group coaching. It's all the same stuff, about working out your values and your priorities and aligning your life to them, breaking your goals down into manageable chunks etc etc. It's literally nothing you couldn't figure out yourself with a pen, notebook and a couple of hours to yourself.
I have resolved never to give a life coach another penny! It's just not for me!

Cazzovuoi · 04/10/2021 18:14

Tara Rafter is amazing, she changed my sister’s life after divorce. She’s based in Ireland www.thenavigationcoach.com/

Blahdyblahbla · 04/10/2021 18:14

Why don't you just get a job, any job, and go from there? If that's your only problem you don't really need a life coach.
They would have just put those words in a nice wrapper and charged you £80

Cazzovuoi · 04/10/2021 18:15

This sums Mumsnet up in one sentence. You have no experience of a life coach yet in your experience they’re a waste of money. Such shite!!!

No I’m not a life coach, I’m an SEO expert.

StarryStarrySocks · 04/10/2021 18:16

Er, did you read the rest of my post @Cazzovuoi - it's all still life coaching however it is delivered. Hmm

I have used one and is an utter waste of money.
HeronLanyon · 04/10/2021 18:17

I always think they’d be a complete waste of money as those I e seen I kind of think either you’re very young inexperienced in life or just a very different kind f life etc. I’d think about a bit of counselling to get your confidence and self worth generally back to where I needs to be. Then some kind of mentor scheme if you are in a particular industry?

PermanentTemporary · 04/10/2021 18:21

A friend had some sessions with a business coach who said to her repeatedly that she should talk to a therapist instead. Friend was insulted and reported it was a waste of money.

The thing is, all of us as her friends would agree that she needs and deserves a therapist Grin to help her work towards the idea that she could choose to work towards a life that's not quite so miserable. So I don't think it was a waste of money, except that it kind of was because she wasn't ready to hear the advice.

Why not start here? Lots of women on MN have been where you are. What did you do before? What's your dream job and why? What's your greatest work fear?

Yeah looks great, she asks you too look at her shop before you even begin🤑🤑🤑

I know a few professional “life coaches” and they are all very young (under 30), come from well off backgrounds, no real responsibilities and have never experienced a days hardship in their lives. I don’t see what any of them can offer the average person with money, career and family problems. Waste of time and money.

CottonSock · 04/10/2021 18:24

I've been learning about this at work. Not sure it would help me as I don't have a goal in mind.

Chrysanthemum5 · 04/10/2021 18:24

I coach people at work - mainly women who are taking leadership training and hoping to advance career. I'm trained in coaching but this isn't my actual job - I just work with people as a coach if they ask for help.

I feel the training helped me to be a better coach because it helps me with having boundaries around what I can abs cannot so to help.

I'll be honest a lot of it is basic common sense but as a coach I hold a space where people can just talk about things that are stopping them moving forward.

Would I pay for it? Probably not and obviously the people I work with don't pay me. You could find a lot of things online and just talk them over with a friend

If you do go for a coach then you need to be really comfortable with them and the coach should be more concerned with whether they are a good fit for you rather than pushing their services.

Best of luck

Cazzovuoi · 04/10/2021 18:25

@lifecoachingandotherbollocks That’s your experience and at leas you have experience.

Also, how do you expect her to make money?! Hmm Would it suit you better if she was broke?

The two people I know who have set themselves up as life coaches, have two of the biggest train wrecks of lives, personal and professional, that I know of. Which is saying something. . .

Yep me too
KirstenBlest · 04/10/2021 18:36

I've had career coaching, paid for by the organisation that made my position redundant. It was excellent.

I've also had another session of career coaching and that was just ok

It depends on the rapport between you and the coach.

If you need help to find the right career for you, there are books that you can use.

over2021 · 04/10/2021 18:38

My sister is a life coach. She's also the last person I would ask for advice. I'm pretty sure she bought her qualification from eBay.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/10/2021 18:39

Do t they just tell you what you know you really ought to do anyway - but because you’re paying them £75 an hour or whatever, you’re much more likely to actually go and do it?

FinallyHere · 04/10/2021 18:45

What outcome would you like from working with a career coach ?

As a PP pointed out, the advice provided here on NM from strangers can sometimes be very effective. How about starting here and seeing how far you can get. If you find a big blocker, you could always get some help with that.

The more specific you can be about what you want, the more likely you are to get good value from outside input.

For example, how would you feel if you had the job you used to do back? Satisfied? Disappointed?

What would your ideal job look like?
