McDonald's birthday parties in the 90s.

Help settle a disagreement (lighthearted one!) with my mum.
We were discussing birthday parties of old and I said how fun the parties at McDonald's were as you got a tour around the kitchen and in the big fridge.
She was convinced this wasn't a thing but my memory is saying otherwise.
So Mumsnet, does anyone remember McDonald's birthday parties of yore? Was there indeed a visit to see the fryers and fridge?!

No. But my kids parties were in the 2000s if that might have a bearing?

AttaGirrrrl · 04/10/2021 17:00

Yes. This definitely happened. And there was a chocolate cake that was unlike any cake I have eaten before or since.

Hellocatshome · 04/10/2021 17:01

I went to McDonald's parties in the 90s we didn't go in the kitchen, we sat in the special party bit, got balloons and did some colouring in.

MedusasBadHairDay · 04/10/2021 17:01

I remember mcdonald's parties, but definitely no tour of the kitchen. I remember loving the toadstool seats though.

Eyesofdisarray · 04/10/2021 17:01

Yes @Justgivemethebrie you're right
We went to one

HoldingTheDoor · 04/10/2021 17:02

Yes there was a visit to see the kitchens. I did it three times(as a guest) and I guess once as a birthday girl though I only remember part of that birthday. The birthday boy/girl got to choose one guest to go with them.

RIBlue · 04/10/2021 17:02

I remember the kitchen tours and the birthday child got to make themselves a milkshake!

ethelredonagoodday · 04/10/2021 17:02

My brother once had a Wimpy party in the late 80s, but Mr Wimpy was on holiday and couldn't come. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/10/2021 17:03

I was born in 1990 and McDonalds parties were a regular thing! I don't remember a kitchen tour though.

AppleBlueberryPie · 04/10/2021 17:04

Yes I definitely remember a tour of the kitchen! I remember seeing someone slide 6 hamburger buns onto the bases simultaneously and my mind was blown.

FedNlanders · 04/10/2021 17:04

Yes!!! They made a burger on our hands!

Lexjo · 04/10/2021 17:04

Yes, I live in Essex and attended McDonald's birthday parties as a kid in the 90's. We definitely did tours of the kitchens.

Miserablewithweight · 04/10/2021 17:04

No kitchen tour that I remember but DH and j were discussing McDonald’s 90s birthdays the other day. The big one near me had a party area upstairs and I remember the special character seats and table plus they had a ball pit! Looked so fun

FuzzyPenguin · 04/10/2021 17:04

Yes I remember going into the kitchens at McDonald’s for a birthday party and the birthday girl got to make a milkshake.
Ooohhh the McDonald’s birthday cake was lush, used to love a McDonald’s party.

BananaPB · 04/10/2021 17:04

I've been to McDonalds parties in the late 80s

FawnFrenchieMum · 04/10/2021 17:05

I had several McD’s parties (and a Burger King one!) but never had a tour of the kitchen!

sarie2468 · 04/10/2021 17:05

Yes!! I had a few parties there and you got a tour of the kitchen and fridge. You could take one friend with you and it was hot topic in school for weeks before who would get picked.
Later on the whole party was allowed rather than just 2 of you.
Once the man doing the tour pretended to lock us in the fridge.. I remember being quite scared!

ANameChangeAgain · 04/10/2021 17:05

Ha ha, yes I remember McDonald's parties. My dad picked my dsis up from one on a Sunday early afternoon. He was horrified that people were eating lunch in there. On a Sunday!! Grin

Frazzledd · 04/10/2021 17:06

Yep, went to quite a few (there was a big Macdonalds locally). And I remember the kitchen tour too (if it was a big party they asked who wanted to go 'hands up' and Ronald pick around 10).

wendz86 · 04/10/2021 17:06

Yep at ours the birthday child picked one friend for a tour.

PurBal · 04/10/2021 17:06

I went to them in the nineties but I was abroad and the McDonald’s and soft play!

StrongerOrWeaker · 04/10/2021 17:06

Yes! We had a tour of the kitchen!

Frazzledd · 04/10/2021 17:07

It probably depended how clean the kitchens were (or who they'd hidden in the freezer Shock)

MintyGreenDream · 04/10/2021 17:08

Wimpy parties were better than McDonalds. Shouting Mr Wiiiiiiiimpy at the top of your lungs then a person came out of a store room dressed in a mucky Mr Wimpy costume.

@Hellocatshome

I went to McDonald's parties in the 90s we didn't go in the kitchen, we sat in the special party bit, got balloons and did some colouring in.
Same. And we had a visit from a very scary looking Ronald McDonald and those weird creatures he called friends
